Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

The Rotary Club of Exeter has teamed up with an international Simon and Garfunkel tribute act to donate much-needed funds to the RD&E’s children’s ward.

The club have donated £2700 to Bramble ward after Dan Haynes and Pete Richards, known as Bookends, pledged the proceeds of a concert they gave in June at the Manor Pavilion Theatre in Sidmouth.

The donation has helped Bramble to buy extra pieces of essential equipment, including a set of multi-functional scales for babies and children and new otoscopes and opthalmascopes for examining children’s ears, noses and throats...

Carers and families of people living across Devon and Cornwall with dementia are being urged to participate in a new initiative which is being launched by Devon and Cornwall police in partnership with Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Dementia Alliance.

Exeter Professor wins international award for psychiatric genetics research

A genetics researcher has won a prestigious award from the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics (ISPG) for his work on diseases that affect the brain.

Professor Jonathan Mill, of the University of Exeter Medical School, has been presented with the 2017 Theodore Reich Young Investigator Award, a prize which celebrates exceptional research in the field of psychiatric genetics.

MUDDY obstacle course, The Bear Trail, which has only been open for just over a year, has made it through to the finals of a prestigious tourism award.

The family attraction, which is based between Exeter and Cullompton, has made it to the top three in the ‘small attraction of the year’ category of the Devon Tourism Awards.

Second World War medals stolen in Teignmouth burglary

Police are appealing to the public after a burglary in Teignmouth which led to the theft of a number of World War II medals.

The burglary took place at an address in Bitton Park Road, Teignmouth between 7.40-11am on Friday 20th October.

Detective Sergeant Dave Mills from Newton Abbot CID said: “This is a particularly heartless burglary as the war medals that have been taken are of huge sentimental value to the family.

Young people are being encouraged to take a break from smartphones to improve their wellbeing and cyber security.

A new poll from YoungMinds and Cyber Aware reports that over a fifth (21%) of 18-25 year-olds surveyed spend more than sixhours a day on their smartphones. This is despite the fact that more than half of them (60%) agree that they would benefit from taking a short break from them.

RD&E's emergency department wins top national award for its patient-centred care

The RD&E’s Emergency Department (ED) has won a top national accolade for the quality of its patient care after making a raft of improvements over the past four years.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine awarded the Exeter team first place in the ‘patient experience’ category of their inaugural annual awards. The team were also runners-up in the ‘clinical team of the year’ category.

Jams made in the restaurant at Otter Garden Centres in Ottery St Mary scooped two golds at this year’s Food & Drink Devon Awards.

The company’s strawberry and raspberry jams were placed gold in the Producers Awards, which this year recognised food and drink products from 29 Devon producers as worthy of this level.
