Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

The sexual health teams at The Centre in Exeter and Barnstaple, part of Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, are taking part in National HIV Testing Week, which runs from 18-25 November 2017. The theme for this year’s National HIV Testing Week is ‘Give HIV the finger’, which promotes the quick and easy finger-prick HIV test. World Diabetes Day: Exeter researcher recruits trial participants

A Diabetes expert is recruiting hundreds of people with a recent diagnosis of the disease to an ongoing clinical trial.

This World Diabetes Day, Dr Angus Jones is looking for people who were diagnosed with diabetes in the last year to participate in a clinical trial, with the long-term aim of improving diagnostic accuracy.

World Diabetes Day is organised by the International Diabetes Federation, and aims to bring attention to important issues in the Diabetes community. An estimated 4.5 million people are living with Diabetes in the UK alone.

YMCA Exeter’s 8th annual Santa Abseil from Princesshay car park returns once again on Saturday 9th December.

Dressed in Santa suits, local people of Exeter, from amateurs to abseiling veterans, will be challenged to take on the 100ft abseil down Princesshay car park to raise funds and awareness for youth homelessness over the festive season.

Swimming spots in Teignbridge have all reached ‘excellent’ bathing water quality standards.

Visitors to Teignbridge will be able to enjoy swimming in cleaner water than ever before thanks to huge strides made to improve water quality.

The Poppies: WAVE on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Plymouth Naval Memorial, will be dismantled this Sunday evening, so anyone wishing to see it before it leaves the town should arrive at the display by 5.30pm on Sunday November 19 before it is dismantled for its next destination next year.

Since its arrival in August, there have been nearly 500,000 visitors at the CWGC Plymouth Naval Memorial to view the spectacular ceramic flowers, with more than 240 volunteers trained by the Commission on hand to show visitors around.

Stagecoach South West lights up Christmas in Exeter

For the second year running Stagecoach is sponsoring Exeter’s Christmas lights switch-on event, taking place on 16 November.

A significant contribution has been made by the bus operator to support the family event, organised by Exeter Business Improvement District (BID).

Last year, over 11,000 people attended the lights switch on. This year, numbers are expected to exceed this as the Cathedral Christmas Market opens on the same night.

Extra bed spaces have been made available for rough sleepers in Exeter over the winter period, the City Council has announced. The 15 extra emergency beds will be provided at Gabriel House in the city centre as part the City Council’s response to providing emergency accommodation and bringing rough sleepers inside during the harshest winter weather. Award winners from this year’s Devon Cycle Challenge have celebrated their achievements at a special presentation at County Hall.

It is the third year that Devon County Council has run the Cycle Challenge as part of Cycle September, and in that time more than 900 new riders have been encouraged to take up cycling by signing up to the scheme. Repairs due to start on A380

The first of a programme of planned repair schemes is due to start on the A380 next week.

Following survey and inspection work carried out on the route earlier this year, Devon County Council has announced that day time lane closures, from 9:30am to 3:30pm, will be introduced on the northbound section of the A380 between Gappah Lane and Wapperwell Cottages from Monday 20 November for a maximum of a week.
