White Stuff Ice Cream Truck Tour heads for Exeter

To celebrate 40 years, White Stuff is hitting the road with a summer ice cream truck tour, which includes a day in Exeter.

Throughout this month they’ll be serving up free scoops along the south coast, bringing their signature style and community spirit to some of the UK’s favourite seaside destinations. Visitors will also be able to ‘Spin To Win’, with the chance to win some of the brand’s 40th Anniversary product.

The tour kicks off in St Ives, where White Stuff is teaming up with St Ives Surf School to offer locals free surf lessons and gear hire on Saturday 19 July....

Crafts, information and wildlife activities come to Exmouth

A fun-filled family day is being held on Exmouth's Maer Local Nature Reserve on Friday August 4 and East Devon District Council 's Countryside team will be there along with a number of other wildlife organisations.

The day starts at 10am where local Tai Chi instructor, Sam Forder will run a free 30 minute Tai Chi taster session.

The fun continues with a range of information and activities on offer including bug hunting, rockpooling and natural crafts. The event will have stalls from a number of organisations including the RSPB, Devon Loves Dogs and the Pebblebed Heaths...

Zip along to Cofton Holidays' new woodland adventure area

Cofton Holidays, near Dawlish Warren, has this week unveiled a brand new £50,000 children’s Woodland Adventure Area, created for on-site guests and day visitors to enjoy free of charge, year-round. Launched to coincide with the start of the summer holidays, the area, which is located above the main facilities just past Cofton’s donkey enclosure, features a 25m zip line, a climbing cage, rope ladders, balance beam, balance lines and scramble nets. Bee creative at Devon Wildlife Trust’s family fun day

Devon Wildlife Trust is inviting families to ‘bee creative in the garden’ at a special wild bee family fun day next week. On August 3, the charity will be opening the gates to the Cricklepit Mill wildlife garden for a family event that aims to celebrate bumblebees and solitary bees, heroes of the pollinator world. Children will have the chance to create a range of bee themed craft items, including alder bees to hang in the garden, bee mobiles, badge making and bee jewellery. Families can also have a go at making bee hotels from bamboo sticks and unique cob brick hotels for hairy-footed...

Devon County Council’s (DCC) country parks have both been named as two of the best in Britain for the ninth time in succession.

The two DCC-managed parks, The Grand Western Canal Country Park, Mid Devon and Stover County Park, Teignbridge, have once again scooped the prestigious Green Flag Award 2017 from the charity, Keep Britain Tidy. They are listed among a record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces that will receive the prestigious award, the mark of a quality park. Old Mill staff raise £20k in memory of colleague

Staff from Old Mill have raised £19,604 by cycling 207 in memory of Exeter employee Nick Baker, who sadly lost a short and sudden battle with cancer in August last year.

Colleagues, friends and family of the riders and Nick greeted the group of riders at the Old Mill offices Yeovil once they had completed the ride, which saw them cycle from St Malo, to Saint Michel, to Lessay and onto Cherbourg before boarding a ferry back to Poole and then back to the West Country.

Dementia researchers raise thousands for charity in epic bike challenge

Five dementia researchers at the University of Exeter have pedalled over an epic 350 miles from London to Paris, raising thousands of pounds for Alzheimer’s Society in a gruelling four day challenge.

Tread carefully: No excuse for being on the road with illegal tyres

Local police officers are out and about near Exeter this week to check that vehicles have safe and legal tyres fitted.

The maximum penalty for driving with defective tyres is three penalty points and a £2,500 fine…and that’s per tyre.

More importantly, defective tyres pose a danger to the driver and to other road users.

Exmouth is Wheelie Great!

Exmouth will have a new temporary landmark on its horizon by the end of this week – a 28 metre high observation wheel with 20, six-seater gondolas which will offer a unique viewpoint over Exmouth, the Exe Estuary and out to sea.

The wheel is located on East Devon District Council land at Beach Gardens opposite the Pavilion Theatre and is operated by Somerset-based MI-Wheel. It opens for rides on Saturday 29 July. It will be on site for 28 days and the wheel operators are seeking planning permission for a further two week extension to mid-September.

An Exeter researcher has just been awarded £362,337 from leading charity Diabetes UK to understand if certain genes can protect people from developing Type 2 diabetes. Dr Hanieh Yaghootkar who works at the University of Exeter Medical School has been awarded Diabetes UK’s R D Lawrence Fellowship, set up in recognition of the life and work of the late Dr R D Lawrence, co-founder of Diabetes UK.
