Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez has given her full backing to Devon County Council’s bid to improve the north Devon link road.

Ms Hernandez, who is joint national PCC lead on road safety alongside Martin Underhill in Dorset, says she is determined to offer whatever support she can to improve the safety of the roads in Devon and Cornwall.

“The North Devon Link Road provides a critically important connection between the M5 and the north of the county,” she said.

“It is the only major road in the area and is relied on by tens of thousands of locals, tourists, commuters and businesses every year.

“A safe, effective and well maintained road link is therefore essential to the economic wellbeing and prosperity of Devon.

“Unfortunately this high number of vehicles makes it prone to a disproportionate number of serious road collisions and other road safety challenges.

“As well as the tragic loss of life and injury, these incidents close the road for many hours causing inconvenience for motorists as the police conduct their investigations. This causes frequent disruption to businesses and commuters alike.

“As police and crime commissioner, I will do whatever I can to support improved road safety in Devon and Cornwall by partnering with colleagues in local authorities, the police and with other agencies and by raising our concerns at a national level.

“Road safety is one of our community’s biggest concerns. Many people do great work to keep people safe locally through efforts like community speedwatch, but there are limits to what can be done on a dangerous stretch of roads such as this.

“I am convinced the proposed improvements to the north Devon link road put forward by Devon County Council will make a major contribution to the safety and wellbeing of our communities and I fully support this bid.”
