The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

In another, my role began as a companion and personal assistant to somebody living with...

Exeter's unique singing sessions start again

"Oh Monday, Monday (ba-da ba-da-da-da)." It's about the lousy feeling that comes with the end of the weekend and beginning of another workweek.

But ... Monday evening ... "Cheaper than therapy and more fun ..."

We are cranking up the machines, TCP'ing the larynx and since early 2007, Forever Young Sing for Fun in Exeter. Mondays 7-9pm at St Sidwell's School EX4 6PG.

We raise the roof and sing to brilliant backing music with the words projected on the wall. Why? Possibly because we are not a choir ... there are no auditions ... no rehearsals ... no microphones ... no...

Exeter teenager Alexandra Daniels has raised over £800 to help fund respiratory research at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in memory of her grandfather.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a lung condition which causes scaring on the lungs and makes breathing increasingly difficult. It has no known cause or cure and the number of people affected by it is rising every year.

Seventeen year old Alex was inspired to start fundraising after her grandfather John Kerley sadly passed away from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 2012. As a thank you for the care that he...

Road users are being warned that widespread ice could affect the county’s roads over the next three nights.

Freezing conditions are again forecast across the county and road surface temperatures are expected to plummet to as low -2C from tonight, Friday 5 January.

Devon County Council is advising people countywide to take extra care as icy patches may be a problem in areas of the county affected by water run-off, particularly on minor roads, following recent rainfall. The worst conditions will occur overnight and in remote areas such as the moors.

The cold spell...

There’s a new interactive way to report graffiti in the city. The new updated system speeds up the reporting of graffiti and gives the public ongoing progress updates. The City Council cleans off for free any graffiti from private homes provided the owners sign a disclaimer form. The new system allows for real-time alerts to be sent directly to the clean-up teams, allowing them to prioritise and email customers to inform them that the job is complete. It also includes updated mapping. Members of the public can take a photograph of graffiti on their smartphone and via the new system, send...

Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Stuart Hughes, has thanked highways teams and staff in the Highways Operations Control Centre (HOCC) for their ‘exceptional’ work in keeping Devon moving over the festive break.
