Medicine student volunteers help hospital weather storm

Exeter’s Medicine students stepped up to volunteer in a wide range of support roles to help staff at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital to continue delivering high quality patient care over the severe weather period.

The RD&E NHS Foundation Trust has thanked Medicine students for their response to an urgent appeal for staff to work after snow and ice, which meant the hospital was extremely busy at a time when many staff were unable to reach work. Among those to answer the call were up to 40 Medicine students in years 3- 5 at the University of Exeter Medical School.

Students from Exeter are all set to run over 100 miles to raise money for St John Ambulance, this spring. A team of six members of the Exeter University First Aid Society (EUFAS) will run the Bath Half Marathon this Sunday (March 4), with one of them using it as training for competing in the following month’s Virgin Money London Marathon. Exeter Homes Trust unveils plans for £9m Exeter redevelopment

Exeter Homes Trust has unveiled plans for the redevelopment of the Fairpark Almshouses, in St Leonards, as part of their mission to combat the city’s homeless crisis.

The three 90-year-old apartment buildings, situated in Fairpark Road, currently contain 12 one-bedroom apartments. The redevelopment will transform the site into 31 modern dwellings, comprising a mix of one and two bedroom units arranged over four floors.

Flood alert for Devon rivers

The Environment Agency today urged Devon residents to be prepared for potential flooding.

A number of alerts are in place across the county including on the rivers Axe, Exe and Otter

The weekend rain has combined with snow melt caused by warmer temperatures causing rivers to rise steadily.

Low lying land and roads are expected to flood and owners of vulnerable properties should take action to protect themselves and property.

Roads now clear to cut off communities

Good progress has been made today (Sunday) in clearing roads to communities left inaccessible due to snow.

The Council’s highways teams have been throwing all available resources at breaking through to previously cut off communities.

The primary salting network across Exmoor, including B roads, is now passable. Roads to villages North East of the North Devon Link Road and a few on Dartmoor and in the South Hams, that this morning were inaccessible, are this afternoon generally passable with care.
