Cancer awareness day in Princesshay

FORCE Cancer Charity is staging its first awareness event in Princesshay this month as part of a new partnership with one of Exeter’s leading shopping and dining centres.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Day is being held on Friday March 23.

A team from FORCE and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital will be in Bedford Square from 11:30am to 3pm.

Specialist nurses will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice and representatives from FORCE will be there to let people know about the face-to-face support available locally to anyone affected by cancer.

Water Babies welcomes silent girls and boys

As The Silent Child, the film starring six-year-old deaf actress Maisie Sly was honoured by winning an Oscar last week, Devon-based Water Babies has collected their own award with deaf children at heart.

Since 2016, Water Babies has been delivering deaf-friendly lessons to 50,000 babies and toddlers on a weekly basis across their international network. On 8 March in Exeter, the national Right to Build Task Force announced a new partnership to support Custom and Self Build, with Teignbridge and its Greater Exeter Strategic Plan (GESP) Partners.

March is over-60s month at two top Devon zoos. The charity attractions are holding special days for older people. At Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, the day of the week to make a note of is Wednesday. At Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, the special day is Thursday. Broadclyst residents call for action over school traffic chaos

A group of Devon villagers are protesting that their village has been turned into a 'giant school car park' and are calling for a national conversation about the school commute.

Broadclyst, near Exeter, has 527 pupils and 88 members of staff at its primary school causing huge pressures on the village.

Police are appealing for witnesses following an attempted robbery which happened on Sunday 4 March 2018 at an Exminster filling station.

New 'Safe Haven' proposal for potential domestic abuse victims

With the number of reported domestic abuse incidents in Devon continuing to rise, a new initiative aims to tackle the shortage of emergency accommodation for people forced to flee their homes because of violence, or the threat of violence.

Under the Safe Haven scheme, they would be offered temporary accommodation in a volunteer family’s home, using the same model as Exeter’s Nightstop scheme for young people at risk of having to sleep rough.

Amongst those ‘sleeping rough’ in Exeter to raise money for young homeless people in the city on Saturday night was none other than young entrepreneur Chris Rundle of city-based GK Signs.
