Exeter Racecourse launches Community Raceday and calls for Devon’s community heroes

Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Every nominee will receive a free ticket to Exeter Racecourse, and one overall winner will be treated to a Family...

Southern Healthcare is an independent care provider with four homes across Devon specialising in complex nursing, dementia and residential care. Sefton Hall located in Dawlish is organising a sponsored walk/wheelchair-push on Saturday 28th April at 10am, starting from its sister home, The Old Rectory in Old Tiverton Road, Exeter – a total distance of 12 miles. This will be followed by a fundraising garden party being held at the Dawlish care home on 7th May Bank holiday, with all welcome to visit and enjoy entertainment by pioneering and contemporary Devon Rock Choir.

District council wants to hear what the East Devon local community thinks about a review of off-street public pay and display car parking fees

East Devon District Council is considering reviewing the charges it makes in some of its off-street public pay and display car parks, as well as to its car park permits. The council has put some proposals forward and is now keen to hear what the local community think of these changes through its consultation, which runs until Friday 1 June 2018.

Children's Hospice SW goes Green

Local charity, Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) has taken some practical steps to ensure its mass participation events are more environmentally friendly.

This year CHSW is holding its much-loved Rainbow Run at Westpoint near Exeter on June 9. It’s a 5k family-friendly fun run, which raises tens of thousands of pounds for the charity.

This year, to help reduce the amount of single use plastic at its Rainbow Run, CHSW will be replacing bottled water with branded reusable water bottles which will be available to purchase and fill up on the day in the event village....

Exeter partners with Dementias Platform UK

The University of Exeter Medical School has been confirmed as a full partner of Dementias Platform UK (DPUK), a partnership of leading universities and prominent industry names striving for better research in dementia.

DPUK is a public-private partnership funded by the Medical Research Council. It aims to bring together researchers from universities and industry to develop effective treatments for dementia.

The Great Rhino Project: Not quite endangered?

In 2016, from 30th of July to 9th of October, the Great Big Rhino Trail brought 42 painted and life-sized rhino sculptures to the streets, parks, and open spaces of South Devon. The purpose of this event was simple – to bring awareness to the issue of endangered Rhinos, and to help raise funds for organisations which work to protect these magnificent creatures.

While this event was a great success, there are still some of those left wondering why it is we put so much stock in these creatures, and can we expect a follow-up event anytime soon?

Exeter's Loungers begin their British title challenge

Exeter’s hopes for this year’s British Skittles Championships rest with the Loungers men’s team who stormed through to the finals last year. The team from the Kings Pub in Cowick Street, only fell at the final hurdle against the more experienced Wiltshire Wonders, who were previous champions.

YMCA Exeter join Exeter City Council in pilot work experience programme

Six young residents from YMCA Exeter were invited to spend a time a day at the Civic Centre to pilot a new programme which aims to introduce homeless people into employment at the Council.

The Christian youth charity, who have existed in Exeter since 1846, provide services in Supported Accommodation, Training and Employment, and Health and Wellbeing.

The residents from YMCA Exeter, who have all experienced homelessness, were given a tour of eight different City Council departments including, Environmental Health, Tourism, Economy and Open Spaces.
