Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

BBC Question Time is coming to Exeter and audience members are wanted for the show.

The political debate programme will be at Exeter Northcott Theatre, Streatham Campus, University of Exeter on Thursday 28 June.

New strategy to reduce plastic waste gets green light

Devon County Council will phase out its use of the most polluting single-use plastic products within two years.

Members of the Council’s Cabinet voted unanimously to support to the move, which is part of a new action plan to help cut the amount of single-use plastic waste in Devon.

The ‘Plastics Strategy’ outlines how various single-use plastic food and beverage packaging and tableware (such as cutlery and cups) will be removed from Council work locations by 2020.

Travel Devon has joined forces with IKEA to help workers at its new Exeter superstore commute to work in a more sustainable and healthy way.

IKEA Exeter opened in the beginning of May and Travel Devon, Devon County Council’s travel advice service, is giving the store’s workers the tools to make informed choices on travelling in a sustainable way. Mortgage repossessions increase whilst all other sectors fall

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has reported a 6.1% increase in the number of mortgage repossession cases listed at Exeter County Court in the year-ending 31st March 2018. This is in comparison to the same period in 2016/17.

Steve Barriball, Citizens Advice Exeter Chief Executive, said: “In the last year there were 560 cases listed for repossession, an overall decrease of 5.6%, or 33 cases, on the previous year. However, there was an increase in mortgage repossessions, which were up by five cases.

Discarded old bikes are being turned back into fit to ride machines thanks to an initiative in Exeter. Exeter City Council has teamed up with Exeter-based charity Ride On Cycling For All to get more and more people cycling more often. Woodbury village near Exeter is celebrating the opening of a new Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) situated on the village playing field.

The MUGA, which has cost over £60,000, provides an all-weather playing surface for 5-a-side football, netball/basketball and cricket.
