Amy tackles huge challenge to thank FORCE

Twelve months ago, Amy Martin could barely run at all after a tough regime of cancer treatment.

But on Sunday May 24, she’ll be one of 440 people lining up as part of Team FORCE at Exeter’s Great West Run.

Amy aims to raise £1,000 for FORCE Cancer Charity to say thank you for all the support she has received from them since a diagnosis of breast cancer in late 2023.

Devon county council is to open up its funding opportunities to benefit a wider range of local groups and community projects.

It’s launching three new funds worth nearly £460,000 to support local voluntary and community organisations, groups and projects that help to make communities stronger, and that improve people’s wellbeing.

The aim is to encourage people to work together to feel part of their communities and to be active in them.

A priority this year is to support projects and groups that help tackle loneliness or isolation.

Councils call for High Streets Fund for new towns

Council leaders have jointly called on government to extend funding to create and improve town centres in new towns.

East Devon District Council and Cranbrook Town Council Leaders have written to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Jake Berry MP, to request eligibility criteria for the Fund be changed to include new towns.

Following six years of major restoration work, the National Trust’s ambitious project to save Castle Drogo, the last castle built in England, is nearing completion. Building work will still be visible, with some external work to be carried out during 2019, however, for the first time in its life the building will be watertight.

Staff now have a big task ahead of them as they begin the huge job of moving all the contents, many of which have been in storage, back in. It’s a job which is expected to take all year. There’s plenty to do - from painting and decorating, to rediscovering...

Ward visiting times at the RD&E will change to 10.30am-8pm from 1 April, 2019, following a year-long pilot to test out more ‘open’ and flexible public visiting times.

For several years, public visiting at the RD&E was limited to afternoons and evenings, but in February 2018 the Trust began piloting 8am-8pm visiting, in line with many other local and national Trusts.

Exe bridges resurfacing work this weekend 

Motorists are being reminded that there will be no access to Bonhay Road from Exe Bridges this weekend (March 23 to March 25) due to resurfacing work.

From 7am Saturday to 6am Monday three lanes of the North Bridge connecting Bonhay Road and Frog Street will be closed.

And In addition, access to Exe Bridges and some adjoining roads will be restricted.

Neither of the bridges will be entirely closed and signed diversions will be in place, but delays should be expected.

This work is being carried over from last weekend, which was cancelled due to high winds....

Three years ago, local charity Hospiscare teamed up with Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends to start the Seaton Hospiscare@Home service in response to the needs of people in Seaton.

This service provides 24/7 hands-on nursing support at home for people with a life-limiting illnesses who are in the final months or weeks of life, enabling patients to be cared for and to die at home, if that is their wish.

Local schoolchildren recently teamed up with coastal conservationists to help tackle the theory and the reality of waste plastic in Torbay.

Pupils from Roselands Primary in Paignton learned about marine pollution with education staff from Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium, then helped clean Goodrington beach with the Torbay Cleaner Coasts Initiative and staff from Torbay Council. National Lottery Award money used for exciting new ‘Virtual Heritage Project’

After winning £5,000 in prize money from the National Lottery Awards in September 2018, the Heritage Ability (HA) team are planning to use the money to fund an exciting new project. The project aims to help partner heritage sites to develop and deliver 360 degree images and films to enhance the accessibility of their sites.
