The festive season is a special time of year when many people come together with family and friends to celebrate.

At Hospiscare, we know that for those adjusting to life without a loved one, it can be a bittersweet time.

Light Up a Life is our annual celebration of the lives of lost loved ones. We hope you will join us for this in-person service at Exeter Cathedral for hand-picked readings, poems, music and carols in honour and remembrance of all those people we hold dear.

Work set to restart on new sea wall which will help protect vital rail artery to the south west for next 100 years

Network Rail is set to restart work on a new bigger sea wall at Dawlish, in Devon, on 9 September which will provide greater protection to the railway and town from rising sea levels and extreme weather for generations to come.

The upgrade, which stopped throughout the peak summer tourism season to minimise disruption on the local community, will now continue through to its completion in spring 2020.

The new sea wall is vital, not just for Dawlish but for the whole of the South West peninsula as the railway connects communities in 50 towns and cities in Devon and Cornwall...

Naomi the grey gibbon, one of the oldest residents of Paignton Zoo, has died.

Animal staff and in-house vets took the difficult decision to put her to sleep after she became seriously ill. Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling: “She went downhill quickly. Clinical signs suggested she might have had a urinary tract problem, which can lead to complications such as kidney failure in older animals. With an animal of that age, you have to be realistic about their quality of life, their ability to recover and their resilience.

A group of Exeter College students recently returned from Honduras after working with conservation research organization Operation Wallacea.

A Level students travelled to Cusuco National Park in Honduras after their exams to work with scientists collecting vital data for use in their research on biodiversity and climate change.

Students gained hands-on experience of monitoring biodiversity within the rainforest, as well as a real life an insight into many of the topics they had studied at college.

The family owners of a Devon holiday park are involving guests in their bid to turn the tide on the scourge of plastic which is polluting West Country beaches.

Ladram Bay Holiday Park near Budleigh Salterton in East Devon is aiming to retrieve one ton of waste washed up on its private beach over the coming months.

The growing total of discarded plastics gathered will be shown by a rising column of sand on a special display board near the beach path.

The Round Britain Coastal Drive, created in 2016 as a one-off event to raise funds for the charity Prostate Cancer UK, is to run again in 2019 for the fourth successive year. Stage 2 will see Jaguar XK owners set off from the Lord Haldon Country Hotel, Dunchideock, Exeter EX6 7YF at 9.30am on Tuesday 17 September. The aim this year is to raise £45,000, in support of the shocking statistic that one man dies every 45 minutes as a result of prostate cancer.

A free bus ride event is being held to celebrate Devon General’s centenary, organised by the Devon General Society and supported by Stagecoach South West,
