Exeter charity SAFE has supported survivors of domestic abuse for 45 years, currently delivering specialist prevention and recovery support for adults and children. Working within a multi-agency service framework, SAFE offers a holistic “whole family approach” to recovery.

“The UK is currently in a national domestic violence crisis, with domestic homicides at 5 year high”, says CEO Emma Morris.

“Supporting families to fully recover from the trauma they have experienced as a result of domestic violence is absolutely essential. The damage that occurs spans emotional wellbeing, mental health, financial security, physical health, employment and education; the very core of the family is damaged.

The impact is felt not just by the victim and the immediate family but across whole communities and wider society; adding pressure to local resources, costing money but most importantly costing lives.  Yet whilst domestic violence is on the increase, funding is decreasing. So, if we are going to support families to recover and be able to rebuild their lives we need to be brave and innovative in our approach. High quality recovery services, such as ours, are not just necessary, they are vital.”

In the last 12 months, at least 16,600 women in Devon will have experienced domestic abuse. SAFE believes that domestic abuse is everybody’s business and have a pioneering vision to open a holistic recovery centre in Devon providinga range of creative, therapeutic services, café, support groups and trauma led therapy programmesas well as high quality training for professionals and employers. The plan includes supporting service users to set up their own enterprises, become financially resilient and move from surviving to thriving.

“It’s a hugely ambitious project, but one that will transform lives and that SAFE has the vision and commitment to deliver”, says Emma.

To kick start the project, SAFE are holding a Winter Ball and it’s set to be a fabulous party!
