Calling all crocheters: Help celebrate the Women’s Rugby World Cup

Crochet enthusiasts in Exeter are being asked to get creative and help celebrate the Women’s Rugby World Cup coming to the city.

Crafters from across Exeter are invited to make rugby-themed crochet pieces for a yarn exhibition at Exeter’s historic Guildhall and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM).

The Women’s Rugby World Cup comes to Exeter in late August and September, with Sandy Park hosting seven games, including two quarter-finals. As a result, the city will welcome players and fans from nine countries as Exeter is put on the global stage....

New signage to improve safety at Grand Western Canal

Two pioneering new safety initiatives have been introduced at the Grand Western Canal Country Park to make the towpath safer for everyone.

A three-mile long ‘Horse-drawn Barge Operating Zone’ is now indicated by new signs at either end, with smaller versions of the sign located at access points between.

Visit South Devon, a Community Interest Company promoting the South Hams, Teignbridge and East and Mid Devon area, has announced a Sustainability Pledge as it furthers its commitment as an ambassador for sustainability in the area.

The CIC is dedicated to championing good sustainable tourism practices across the South Devon region and in helping to support the region’s tourism businesses in making changes to reduce climate change.

NSPCC re-launches safety campaign

Police across the South West of England are dealing with hundreds of sexual offences against young children, according to research by the NSPCC.

A Freedom of Information request to police forces shows that in 2018/19 there were at least 7,618 recorded sexual offences against children aged four to eight in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Of those, 779 offences were recorded by south west forces.

The NSPCC has also revealed that last year hundreds of children under the age of 11 living across the UK contacted Childline about sexual abuse.

A programme which has seen 500 young people take part in activities, ranging from a residential stay in Cornwall to developing a social action project, has received huge support from the Exeter business community.

The National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme is delivered in Exeter by the CITY Community Trust. Organisers of the Exeter’s Great West Run have pledged that this year’s event will not use any plastic bottles, thanks to an exciting new partnership with South West Water and Packed Meal Prep.

Due to the adverse weather conditions that are forecast over the next few days, in the interests of health and safety, East Devon District Council has reluctantly taken the decision to postpone Honiton Gate to Plate

A new planning application for a railway station at Marsh Barton will be submitted at the start of 2020, Devon County Council has announced. Changes to design standards led to rising costs and an unsuccessful bid to the Department for Transport's New Stations Fund left a funding shortfall which delayed the project.
