THE organising committee and trustees behind Exeter Pride have been awarded £20,000 in National Lottery funding to support their work in delivering an even bigger and better event.

Exeter Pride, which celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer/questioning plus (LGBTQ+) communities, has gone from strength to strength in recent years and now organises one of the largest free pride events in the South West.

Accessibility and inclusivity are at the core of Exeter Pride’s mission to bring the whole community together in a celebration of diversity.

A VOLUNTEER army of more than 150 volunteers are working from home across Devon to provide vital PPE back up for local NHS and healthcare front liners after a community fundraising appeal netted more than £2,000 in just one week.

Across Devon, the talented crew of craftspeople are stitching and cutting around the clock to provide essential scrubs, laundry bags, and headbands, as well as printing 3D visors, to help protect key staff in hospitals, care homes and in the community.

Devon, Somerset and Torbay Trading Standards Service is reminding residents to ‘stay home, stay safe and stay scam aware’, as new coronavirus (COVID-19) related scams continue to emerge.

A University of Exeter expert has been elected to one of the world’s most prestigious academic organisations.

Professor John Dupré joins Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein in becoming a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Professor Dupré researches the philosophy of science, including biological classification, evolution, the limitations of evolutionary psychology, the biological basis of sex and gender and the philosophy of economics. One More Push! Charity at heart of corona fightback calls for final donations to reach target

One more push! That’s the plea of a charity appealing for £60,000 to continue its work for the elderly and the vulnerable in a Devon community.

The Estuary League of Friends is based in Topsham and delivers social care to that community and those in a wide area nearby reaching parts of Exeter, Clyst St George and Clyst St Mary, and towards Exmouth.

In recent weeks the charity has of course added to its usual work with a huge effort to help those most in need during the Coronavirus crisis.

Doctors in Devon are reassuring local people that the NHS is still there for them if they are unwell and need help.

NHS chief executive Sir Simon Stevens has warned that delays in getting treatment due to coronavirus fears pose a long term risk to people’s health.

The message comes as new findings that four in ten people are too concerned about being a burden on the NHS to seek help from their GP. Exeter volunteers and businesses band together to supply PPE Face-masks for care-workers

In response to the dire need for PPE for frontline healthcare staff, a non-profit group has formed called PPE4Exeter with a goal of manufacturing 5000 face-masks in the next four weeks.

What started as a small group of volunteers, making face-shields for GPs surgeries and local health and care teams in Devon and Somerset, has blossomed into a collaboration between individuals, local businesses, and organisations, who have already managed to supply over 600 face-masks to frontline staff in the Exeter region since banding together just under three weeks ago.

A consortium featuring the University of Exeter has been awarded £3.7m in funding to develop a suite of postgraduate conversion courses in AI and data science.

A new test which could detect whether people who have had COVID-19 are still infectious is under development, thanks to funding from Animal Free Research UK.
