Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Devon Air Ambulance targeted by bright lights

There has been a lot in the press recently about the danger of lasers, with aircraft often being the target. However, we would also like to highlight that it’s not just lasers that can be of danger to aircraft, after one of ours was targeted this week by a car, aggressively flashing its headlights.

Rob Mackie, Safety Manager for Devon Air Ambulance, explains “At approximately 7.30pm on Thursday we undertook a training flight from our Exeter airbase to our North Devon airbase at Eaglescott using night vision goggles (NVGs).”

New streetlighting contract will reduce carbon emissions

A ll of Devon County Council’s 79,000 streetlights will be converted to LED lights within the next two years – reducing carbon emissions by 75%.

It comes as SSE Contracting (SSEC) has been awarded the contracts to maintain the streetlights in Devon and Torbay for the next 10 years – with the aim of the contract being carbon neutral by 2030.

The company will be building on the work it has undertaken for the County Council for more than 25 years, which has already seen around 34,000 streetlights converted to low energy LED technology since 2015, as well as the replacement...

Celebrate Exeter’s ethnic diversity as part of Black History Month

People are being encouraged to celebrate Exeter’s ethnic diversity as part of Black History Month.

Cllr Amal Ghusain, Lead Councillor for Communities and Culture, said the city should celebrate its black history and tell the stories that need to be told.

She said there were a number of sources available as part of Black History Month including interesting online content at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, which opens up to visitors again on 24 October.
