Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week: Why Devon-based apprentice chose to do an apprenticeship at Redrow
Trainee carpenter Adrian Jones joined Redrow Homes as an apprentice in the South West region, after looking to become qualified in a new career later in his life.
Adrian started his training as an apprentice carpenter with the housebuilder in August 2018 and has been based at the Potters Lea development in Kingsteignton, Devon, ever since.
When asked about his apprenticeship Adrian said: “The apprenticeship has been perfect for me as an older learner wanting to change careers.
“I have learnt about all aspects of carpentry and I am involved in the construction and building of new homes. Redrow have been more than supportive with me during the apprenticeship.”

The housebuilder’s apprentice and trainee programmes provide a great way to get qualifications whilst also earning a good wage. Redrow offers apprenticeships in commercial, office, trade, and technical areas, and it makes sure it has picked the most advantageous qualifications for apprentices to gain whilst completing these. Those that do complete apprenticeships with us will gain either a role specific Apprenticeship Standard or a level 3 Diploma and NVQ depending on the apprenticeship they undertake.
Redrow provides clear progression paths and further education opportunities for apprentices at all levels. Apprentices that stay on with Redrow in its commercial and technical departments can have the opportunity to study a sponsored degree or a higher-level apprenticeship in this field.
As part of its dedication to teaching the future housebuilding leaders Redrow also founded a three-year degree in 2017 in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and Coleg Cambria. The three-year degree nurtures candidates’ skills in housebuilding quality, project management, health and safety, business skills, negotiation, right through to relevant aspects of law, mathematics, and economics.
Adrian, who has just achieved a distinction in his final exams, continued: “When I finish my carpentry apprenticeship, my plan is to work for the contractor that I am with at the moment.

At any one time, Redrow has upwards of 170 apprentices learning one of the key housing trades as well as recruiting office apprentices.

We have seen a rise in applications throughout the years and in our 2020 annual report on perceptions of apprenticeships and careers in construction we found that 47% of 16–21-year-olds in Exeter would consider applying to an apprenticeship scheme regardless of the sector.”
