Scientists develop algorithm to help relieve pressure on the NHS

New research suggests an algorithm could be used to help optimise the sharing of healthcare resources during the Covid-19 pandemic, preventing NHS intensive care units (ICU) from becoming overwhelmed.

The study, led by Queen Mary University of London and including Dr Leon Danon from the University of Exeter, proposes a load balancing method to transfer critical ICU patients across hospitals and optimally allocate new patients, which could help to reduce stress on health systems in the second wave and potential subsequent waves to come.

On Monday 19th October 2020, Greenpeace Exeter hosted an online event to discuss the improvements needed to local transport and the role that investing in zero carbon public transport, walking and cycling has to play in a Green Recovery from the pandemic. This event was generously supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

Photography competition to find favourite trees in Exeter

People are being asked to take a picture of their favourite tree in Exeter as part of a photographic competition.

The best picture will win a tree – kindly donated by Devon Tree Services - and a framed photograph of the picture. There is also an under-16 category for budding junior photographers, with the same prizes donated by the City Council.

With the clocks set to go back on the last Sunday in October (25 Oct), Devon County Council is issuing its annual “be safe, be seen” message to road users.

The authority is reminding everyone to take extra care on Devon’s roads at this time of year, particularly in poor weather conditions when visibility may be reduced.

Cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and horse riders are encouraged to wear reflective and fluorescent clothing to ensure they can be seen.

Tributes paid to city councillor

Tributes have been paid to Exeter City Councillor Judy Pattison who died late last week at her Exeter home.

Cllr Pattison, 70, was the Labour Party member for Mincinglake and Whipton.

She was elected to office in Exeter in 2018, having previously served as a councillor in Camden in London. She was Mayor of Camden in 2002/3.
