Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

THE date of the 43rd Dartmoor Folk Festival, which takes place in the foothills of Dartmoor at South Zeal near Okehampton each year, has been announced.

It has been scheduled for August 6, 7 and 8, 2021 and, all being well, will include a packed weekend of concerts, ceilidhs, workshops, song and music sessions, children's festival, craft displays, folk service, Dartmoor ramble and much more.

Despite the postponement of the full 2020 Dartmoor Folk Festival in August, the festival's traditional competitions and some fun activities went ahead on-line.

Road use drops 30% since start of lockdown

Car use is around 30% lower on weekdays during lockdown 2.0, according to new data released by the Department for Transport.

Weekend road use is also down sharply, a 40% drop since the tighter restrictions came into effect.

By contrast, average car use plummeted 65% during the first lockdown, while April’s Easter weekend registered the lowest level of non-weekday car traffic, coming in at 75% lower than usual.

Shoppers in Devon are being asked to donate to a food collection that supports the Trussell Trust and FareShare as they help people in crisis during the Covid-19 pandemic this Christmas.

The Tesco Food Collection takes place every year in Devon, but this year’s collection is more vital than ever. It comes as Trussell Trust food banks and community groups that get food from Fareshare face an unprecedented need for supplies.

Kerbside coffee pod recycling looks set to be introduced in Exeter

People in Exeter may soon be able to recycle their plastic and aluminium coffee pods from home thanks to a new initiative from the local authority.

Exeter City Council looks set to become one of the first councils in the country to allow residents to recycle the pods as part of its kerbside recycling collections.

Working with Podback, a not-for profit organisation, the Council is set to encourage householders to collect their plastic and aluminium coffee pods and then put them out for recycling collections in a separate bag to the green bin.

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is reminding the public to respect its people when calling 999 for an ambulance this winter. Figures from the Trust indicate abuse against its 999 call handlers has more than doubled since the beginning of the full UK lockdown in March. Control room staff reported 77 verbal abuse incidents from callers between 23 March and 23 October, representing a 133% increase on the 33 incidents reported during the same time period in 2019. Maintenance work set to be carried out on popular canal bridge

Salmonpool Swingbridge - which crosses the Exeter Ship Canal - is set to close for much of next Wednesday (25 November), to allow maintenance to be carried out.

New city homelessness service opens its doors in Exeter

A newly refurbished homelessness service in Exeter is set to provide much-needed short-term accommodation for the city’s homeless.

Having opened in Howell Road this week, it will offer 11 bedrooms and communal facilities for homeless adults and those at risk of being made homeless.
