Sheep Return to Bideford Bridge in Celebration of 555 Years of Westcountry Wool Heritage

A centuries-old tradition will return to North Devon when sheep are driven across Bideford Bridge during the Bideford Town Fair on Saturday 6 June at 10.00am.

The ceremonial sheep drive, last undertaken in 2012, will be led by the historic Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen as part of celebrations marking 555 years since the Guild was gifted land in Exeter on which it built the magnificent Tuckers Hall - the medieval home of the Incorporation and one of the country’s most important surviving guild halls.

Budleigh residents can choose outdoor gym design

East Devon District Council has been working with Budleigh Salterton Town Council and healthcare professionals to provide Budleigh residents with the free-to-use outdoor gym that they want.

Now the partners would like Budleigh Salterton residents of all ages to decide how it should look by voting for the design they like best.

Man surrenders after firearms stand off

Police have arrested a 32 year-old man in a firearm incident after a nearly four hour long standoff in Barnstaple last night (2 December). The man was threatening to harm himself and anyone who might approach him on Castle Street from around 4.00pm Police cordoned off the area closing down the Strand and the surrounding area in Barnstaple to ensure the safety of all parties. The man surrendered after a successful police negotiation and was arrested at 7:45pm. Elite award for EDDC alarm service

East Devon District Council’s Home Safeguard service has comfortably retained a coveted industry chartermark – putting it among the top alarm providers in the UK.

The service for frail and vulnerable people first won the Telcare Services Association (TSA) accreditation three years ago and has since successfully passed two annual check-ups.

Last month (November), the TSA conducted a three-yearly audit, which is a tougher test than the annual checks and more akin to the original inspection in 2010, subjecting every aspect of Home Safeguard to in-depth scrutiny.

Microplastics make marine worms sick

Tiny bits of plastic rubbish could spell big trouble for marine life, starting with the worms, say a team of researchers from the University of Exeter and Plymouth University who report their evidence in a pair of studies in the Cell Press journal Current Biology. The marine worms play a key ecological role as an important source of food for other animals. University staff stage second strike

University of Exeter staff are taking part in a second day of national strikes over pay conditions today (3 December). Members of the UCU, Unite and UNISON unions are holding a second day of strikes having already taken industrial action on October 31. Members of the EIS union, which represents Scottish university staff, are also join today’s strikes not having taken part of the previous strike. Neil Parish, MP for Tiverton and Honiton, has pledged his support for Halve It, a national coalition campaign that aims to halve late diagnosis and undiagnosed HIV in the UK by 2015.

Tough Choices needed on highways budget proposals

Devon County Council is exploring a number of options to reduce its highways and traffic management budget by almost £7 million.

As part of the County Council’s latest Tough Choices consultation, which was launched in September, Devon is considering how to cut spending in 2014/15.

Firearm incident in Barnstaple

Police have said they are dealing with an ongoing firearms incident in Castle Street, Barnstaple. The situation began shortly after 4pm after concerns were raised for the welfare of a man inside a property. Police have asked people to stay away from the Castle Street area for the time being while the situation

The Strand in Barnstaple closed between the A3125 Long Bridge junction and the Cross Street junction, in connection to this.

Also affecting Castle Street between Cross Street and Commercial Road.
