The Exeter takes on London to Paris cycle for Macmillan Cancer Support

UK health and life insurer The Exeter has announced that seven of their colleagues are preparing to cycle 340 miles from London to Paris in June 2026, as part of a major fundraising effort for the company’s corporate charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already raised more than £23,000, with fundraising continuing ahead of the challenge. The ride reflects The Exeter’s ongoing commitment to supporting Macmillan’s work, which provides care, practical support and advocacy for people affected by cancer across the UK.

Over £1,000 stolen from Hospice fundraiser.

Police are investigating the theft of over £1,000 of charity money stolen from a Hospice charity fundraiser in Ilfracombe last Wednesday (18th December).

The money- thought to total £1,130- was stolen sometime between 8:45pm and 9:30pm, during the interval of a well attended Charity Bingo event in Combe Martin Village hall.

The money was taken from a tin on the hall’s stage at an event attended by over 150 people.

Ex-Chiefs players row for the Philippines

Two former Exeter Chiefs players are urging people to help them row the distance to the Philippines to raise money for two charities.

Former Chiefs Captain Sam Blythe and teammate Shane Kingsland will start on January 1st and want to complete 11 million metres by the end of the month.

They are planning to row a million metres each - that’s around 32 kilometres (or 19 miles) every day.

Now they want members of the public to get on the rowing machine for the event - called Janurow - to help them reach their target.

Funding boost for Teignbridge businesses

Teignbridge businesses could be in line for an EU funding boost after parts of the district were included in a draft map for Assisted Area Status.

Five Teignbridge wards covering parts of Newton Abbot, Ipplepen, Coffinswell and Kingskerswell have been included in the Assisted Area Status Map (AAS) that will cover the next European Union funding period from 2014 to 2020.

Assisted Area Status permits the granting of additional financial support to small businesses and large enterprises in economically disadvantaged locations.

800 presents delivered to local schools

In the run up to Christmas, members of LV=’s Exeter Community team spent the day delivering 800 presents to eight local preschools and primary school around the local area.

Dressed as Father Christmas, Dave Cotton and colleagues visited the schools in traditional grotto fashion, delighting children with early Christmas presents. Devon and Cornwall and Dorset Police to collaborate in "all areas of policing"

Police in Devon and Cornwall and Dorset will review how the two forces can collaborate more effectively in “all policing areas”.

The review was revealed in a joint announcement from the Chief Constables and Police and Crime Commissioners from both forces.

A project team is expected to carry out the review across a six month period, which will look into how to maintain a good service across both forces at a time when police budgets are decreasing.

Spiders may not be the pure predators we generally believe, after a study found that some make up a quarter of their diet by eating pollen. Dr Dirk Sanders of the University of Exeter demonstrated that orb web spiders – like the common garden variety – choose to eat pollen even when insects are available. Spider webs snare insect prey, but can also trap aerial plankton like pollen and fungal spores. Two police dogs with more than 18 years service between them will retire from the Force next month. German shepherd ‘Asbo’ and sprocker spaniel ‘Springo’ have both enjoyed long careers under the watchful eye of police dog handler, PC Ian Tolchard, based at Camborne. Asbo, a nine-year-old general purpose police dog, joined the Force in 2005 and has been highly successful in his role, finding missing people and locating criminals. Councils face fresh austerity cuts

Local councils will see their budgets reduced even further in the latest round of austerity cuts.

Eric Pickles, Local Government secretary announced that most local authorities could see their spending power reduced by nearly 3%.

The reduction in spending power- calculated to include council tax and Westminster grants- is estimated to total more than £1.7bn across all UK local authorities.

Good news for cyclists and walkers on Dartmoor

Devon County Council has agreed the proposed schedule of schemes to increase walking and cycling on Dartmoor.

The “Granite and Gears” project, led by the County Council and Dartmoor National Park, was awarded £4.4 million fundingfrom The Department for Transport's (DfT) Cycling Ambition fund in August.

The project is also supported with an additional £3 million from Local Transport Plan funding, section 106 money and contributions from Devon County Council, Dartmoor National Park, Teignbridge District Council and West Devon Borough Council.

House prices forecast to keep rising in 2014

House prices in the South West are set to rise again as demand continues to exceed supply, surveyors have forecasted.

According to new figures released today by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) house prices in the South West will increase by a further 7% over the next year.

Rental costs are also set to rise by a further 2% which will carry over into the cost of living.

The forecast is echoed nationally as well with the average UK house price set to rise by 8% in the next year.
