The Exeter takes on London to Paris cycle for Macmillan Cancer Support

UK health and life insurer The Exeter has announced that seven of their colleagues are preparing to cycle 340 miles from London to Paris in June 2026, as part of a major fundraising effort for the company’s corporate charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already raised more than £23,000, with fundraising continuing ahead of the challenge. The ride reflects The Exeter’s ongoing commitment to supporting Macmillan’s work, which provides care, practical support and advocacy for people affected by cancer across the UK.

Heavy rain warning in Devon

Outbreaks of heavy rain spreading slowly eastwards across South West England are likely to hit Devon from 3pm this

later in the day before clearing away east in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Met Office has warned that with the ground remaining saturated, people should be aware of the risk of further localised flooding within the warning area.

Police in north Devon have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with a knifepoint robbery in South Molton. An 18-year-old woman was robbed at knifepoint in Lloyds TSB in East Street, South Molton at around 8.52pm on Friday 17 January. The victim was standing in the foyer of the bank about to withdraw cash from the cash machine when an unknown man approached her. He was holding a knife and demanded that she withdrew £100. Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner is calling on supermarkets and retailers to join the fight to reduce alcohol related crime and misuse. Police appeal after unprovoked attack

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was allegedly assaulted in an attack in Dartmouth at the weekend. The 43-year-old victim was approached by a man in Smith Street between about 11.45pm on Saturday 11 January and 12.15am on Sunday 12 January. He was punched in the face before passing out, and sustained facial injuries. A passer-by who may have seen the attack assisted him. Police believe this was an unprovoked attack. Morrisons and IKEA sites approved by council

Exeter City Councillors have given the go ahead on plans to build an IKEA store in Exeter and for the new Morrison’s supermarket in the council’s planning meeting yesterday evening.

However while the plan was approved by the council, the planning permission at the Morrisons site has been suspended for six months until further research can been carried out by the Highways agency.

The new Morrisons store will be located at the Police headquarters in Middlemoor while the Ikea Store will be on the development site near Sandy Park.

Devon Company fined after accident

A Devon company has been fined after a man was seriously injured by a reversing vehicle at a recycling centre in Exeter.

In early October, Marvon Van Rijk, an employee of Leases Limited was sorting through recycling waste at the company’s site at Matford business park when he was hit by a reversing telehandler, a heavy industrial vehicle.

The collision left Mr Van Rijk with serious and life-threatening injuries to his legs which required immediate emergency surgery.

Mr Van Rijk survived the incident but requires ongoing surgery due to his injuries.

Heavy fog disrupts Exeter travel

Heavy fog is casuing delays on the M5 between Exminster and Exeter this morning.

The met office has issued a yellow weather warning predicting the fog to remain for much of the morning.

The Met Office's Chief Forecaster said: "Fog patches will affect some parts of the yellow area as early as Monday evening. However, there is potential for fog to become more widespread overnight and into Tuesday morning. Some places within the yellow area will not see fog, but where it forms it could be locally dense with visibility falling below 200 metres.

A new headteacher has been appointed at St Peters School in Exeter.

She is Rachel Hutchinson, who is currently vice principal of King Edward VI Community College in Totnes. Mrs Hutchinson will take up her new post after the Easter holidays.
