The Exeter takes on London to Paris cycle for Macmillan Cancer Support

UK health and life insurer The Exeter has announced that seven of their colleagues are preparing to cycle 340 miles from London to Paris in June 2026, as part of a major fundraising effort for the company’s corporate charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already raised more than £23,000, with fundraising continuing ahead of the challenge. The ride reflects The Exeter’s ongoing commitment to supporting Macmillan’s work, which provides care, practical support and advocacy for people affected by cancer across the UK.

Work starts soon on Honiton’s new skate park

Work will start soon on building a fabulous new £90,000 skate park in Honiton – designed by the users. The existing park will close on 17 February for around 10 weeks while the work is carried out.

East Devon District Council (EDDC), and young people from Honiton Youth Centre and Honiton Community College have been working together since July 2013 to design the improvements to the facility in Allhallows Field that skate park users have asked for.

Exeter Library opening date revealed

Visitors are expected to flock to Exeter Library on Thursday 22 May, when Devon County Council’s multi-million pound refurbishment is finally revealed.

The opening date is announced this week in a special report to Councillors of the Exeter Board ahead of its meeting on Monday 27 January.

The County Council report follows public consultation on Exeter Library, as well as Pinhoe, St Thomas and Topsham libraries, which drew 555 responses.

Parks and open spaces in Exeter could increasingly be managed by community groups as local authorities receive less and less funding, the City Council has announced.

Exeter City Council has invited groups and individuals across the city to discuss opportunities for local management or ownership of key areas of public open space in Exeter in the near future.

Rise in Devon jobseeker numbers goes against national trend

The number of Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon has increased slightly for the second month in a row.

During December 2013, the number of people claiming JSA increased by 88 claimants (1.3%) and now stands at 6,667.

Although this contrasts with the national trend, which has seen a decrease, the JSA claimant rate in Devon stands at 1.5% of the working age population, which is around half the national rate of 2.9%.

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) has been shortlisted in the most improved category of the Flu Fighter Awards 2013/14.

A groundbreaking new app will unlock the secrets of a unique 10th century manuscript for schoolchildren.

Medieval manuscripts are normally accessible only to scholars as they are so fragile, but an app designed for an iPad will bring them to life for a whole new generation.

Police seek brick attack witnesses

Police in Newton Abbot are appealing for witnesses after a man was allegedly assaulted in the town on Tuesday 21 January. The assault happened on Powderham Road early in the afternoon, between around 1pm and 3pm. A man approached the 27-year-old victim and assaulted him with a brick. The victim suffered leg injuries as a result of the incident. The suspect is described as white, short and of stocky build.
