Public Consultation Opens on Proposed Merger Between Exeter College and Petroc

Exeter College and Petroc have today launched a public consultation on a proposed merger that would see two Devon colleges come together to form a new College Group.

If approved, the new organisation, the Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group (ENDC), would serve more than 16,000 learners across Devon, employ nearly 2,000 staff and have a combined turnover exceeding £100 million.

Two Devon brothers have gone to Paris in search of love – but there’s a sting in the tail.

The two are venomous stingrays from Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo.

Exeter Investment business to sponsor Devon Opera

Devon’s own professional opera company has been boosted by the news of a new sponsor just prior to its first performance of the year.

Devon Opera has attracted the support of Exeter based Hawksmoor Investment Management who have agreed a one year sponsorship deal with the charity.

The announcement comes as the company prepares for an operatic extravaganza at Bovey Castle, Moretonhampstead, on Saturday 1 March when they will present an evening of extracts from works ranging from La Traviata and La Boheme to Madame Butterfly and Cavalleria Rusticana.

Spate of motorcycle thefts in Devon

Police are appealing for information after a spate of off-road motorcycle thefts in the Teignbridge area over the last weekend. Some five bikes worth £34,000 were taken in one raid from a remote location in Tedburn St Mary. The five bikes belong to motocross freestyle professional Jamie Sqiubb (pictured) whose bikes are his livelihood. Taken were a green 2014 Kawaski KXF450F, a blue 2011 Yamaha YZ250, a red Gasgas 250 trial bike and two red Honda CRF 50cc mini bikes. Appeal to find owner of family photographs

Caroline Wetton, from Coventry, is appealing for help in locating the rightful owner of over 1,000 photographs believed to belong to someone in Devon.

Caroline was given a bagfull of photographs after they had been found in an old cupboard. Rather than dispose of the photographs she believes they should be returned to their rightful owner.

The photographs date from the early 1900s, through the First World War and to about 1993.

A small earthquake reported in North Devon has been confirmed by the British Geographical Survey.

The small quake is thought to have taken place in the Bristol channel off the at around 1.21pm today.

The quake is reported to have lasted around 3 seconds.

The quake is reported to have been felt as far away as North Wales by users of the social media site twitter.

People responding to the BGS have reported feeling the quake in Dartmoor, Bristol, Taunton, Swansea, Llanelli, Exmouth, Barnstable, Gloucester, South Molton.

UPDATE: Young campaigners against the cuts to the Council’s Youth Service have been denied the chance to speak at today’s full council meeting to set the next year’s budget. Campaigners had asked for three minutes to address the council before a decision was made on the future of several major services including the youth service. Chefs prove there's naan better!

The winners of the Exeter and Teinbridge Curry Chef of the Year 2014 have been announced.

Bijumon Varghese, of the Curry Leaf, in North Street, Exeter, was crowned Exeter Curry Chef of the Year, while Top Swar, of Gurkha Chef, Newton Abbot, took the honours for Teinbridge.

Last week was very special for one of Angela Court’s residents.

Clifford Long had a double celebration, his 90th birthday and his anniversary for living at Angela Court for an impressive 25 years.

The double header was recognised by all our staff who planned some lovely activities to celebrate both remarkable events. Consultation on Kingskerswell Road improvements

A public consultation on proposals to improve Kingskerswell Road between Newton Abbot and Kingskerswell is underway.

Decoy Industrial Estate, which is currently home to 25 businesses, is planned to expand to create around 500 new jobs.

Devon County Council and Teignbridge District Council are proposing the £2.6 million upgrade of the road in order to accommodate the potential extra traffic and the authorities will be consulting on the proposals until Friday 28 February.
