Bicton Arena is gearing up for its first affiliated horse trials of the season with a huge entry received for the two-day competition which starts this Friday (April 25).

With the picturesque arena set in the rolling parklands of the Clinton Estate in East Devon, and thousands of spectators and competitors expected to attend over the course of the two days, many new businesses have stepped forward to sponsor the event.

Long term sponsors Everys, a south-west based firm of solicitors, continues to support the all-weather arena, while Rathbones is a new sponsor of the main grass arena. Mole Valley Farmers, Harrison-Lavers & Potbury’s, Land Rover, Devon Contractors Ltd, Cheffings Equine and Wychanger Barton and the Western Morning News are also on board.

Arena manager Helen West, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the fact that new sponsors are coming forward and with the number of entries from across the range, from grass roots competitors to established international stars like Mary King, Lucy Wiegersma and Sam Griffiths. It promises to be a fantastic two days, with not only great competition but several trade and local food stands as well.”

Katie Dumas, from Shepton Mallet, whose daughter Millie, a young rider team silver medalist last year, will ride two horses on Friday, said: "We are really looking forward to supporting one of the best West Country venues at Bicton. We have two horses entered in the Intermediate class with Millie riding my own Cyres and Natalie Stevens' The Duke of Cavan.

“For once Natalie, who lives in Cornwall, will not have to travel too far to watch her horse as most events of this level are up country.

“I have great memories of Bicton going back nearly 30 years ago when it held classes up to Advanced level and was a pre- Badminton warm up for many and a fun weekend for everyone.

“It is great that there is an enthusiastic team in place, taking the event forwards headed by Helen West and I look forward to seeing Eric Winter's input on the course design.

“I'm sure that it won't be too long before we see this event return to International status and receive the support it deserves."

Gates open to spectators on both days at 9am. Entrance is £10 per car with a donation to a nominated charity.
