A38 restrictions remain during works clearing

Speed restrictions on the A38 will remain in place this weekend as the Highways Agency prepare to close most of England’s roadworks for the bank holiday weekend. The Highways Agency says that works on the A38, near Haldon Hill, cannot be removed due to safety concerns caused by the removal of the road’s safety barrier to fit a contraflow. However, the agency believe that the delays caused by the road work will be “slight”.

Appeal after Aylesbeare robbery

Police are appealing for information following a burglary at a home in Aylesbeare, Exeter, on Saturday (10 May). Offenders forced a door to get inside the home sometime between 9.30am and 7pm. After making an untidy search of the house, they stole a black laptop, a still camera and a £1,500 projector, various items of jewellery and a brass compass in a box. They also took a distinctive scalloped edged silver tray engraved with ‘Ultra International’ which was from a conference in New Delhi. Meet the builders day at Castle Drogo

Visitors to Castle Drogo will get the opportunity to learn more about the ongoing building work to make building water tight on 27 May.

In 2013 one of the largest projects ever undertaken by the National Trust began at Castle Drogo.

The husband of a Devon woman killed while on a fundraising cycle challenge has thanked donators from around the world for their generosity. Sharon Bridgman, 38, was killed in April after she was struck by a motorist whilst on a round-the-world, to raise money for the charity Shelterbox, with her husband. Annual tree walks begin again this summer

East Devon District Council’s Countryside team will be starting their ever-popular annual series of Tree Walks on Monday 2 June at 6.30pm at Phear Park in Exmouth. The topic for this walk will be the management of trees in council-owned recreational areas.

On Monday 16 June the Tree Officers will lead a walk around Plymtree, focusing on the village trees and hedgerows.

The final walk will be on Monday 30 June at 6.30pm at East Budleigh, looking at local trees of interest and discussing the part they play in the community.

Man dies in Devon tractor accident

A man died when his tractor overturned after leaving a field.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the scene at Northmostown near Sidmouth yesterday afternoon (Monday May 19).

The tractor had been towing a trailer when it overturned just before 12:50pm. The male driver was trapped and despite the efforts of emergency crews died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed.

Communities to set restorative sanctions

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg has begun a consultation process which will see communities across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly set their own list of restorative sanctions for low level offences.

Mr Hogg is asking individuals and organisations across the peninsula to take part in the survey on a new Government initiative, the Community Remedy, which will give victims a say in how those who commit low level crime and antisocial behaviour are dealt with.
