The Hidden Strain of Dementia Support Systems

When people think about dementia, they often think about memory loss, diagnosis, or the practical aspects of care.

What is spoken about far less is the emotional toll of trying to navigate support systems, whilst also coping with the reality of someone you care about living with dementia.

Over the past few years, families have reached out to me for support during incredibly vulnerable times. In one situation, a family approached me specifically for guidance and advocacy.

Refunds offered for Saturday Show tickets

The Devon County Show is offering a full refund to everyone who bought tickets in advance but was unable to use them on Saturday, May 24. The decision was made at a Board of Management meeting of the Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA) held on Monday, May 26. DCAA Chairman of the Board of Management, John Maunder, said: “Whilst the abandonment of the Show was forced on us by the extreme weather conditions, and will have a significant financial impact, we want to do right by our paying visitors.

Woman rushed to RD&E after Tiverton collision

A woman has been rushed to RD&E hospital following a serious collision near Tiverton. Emergency services were called to the scene, near Tiverton Golf Club, at 8:37am this morning (Tuesday 27 May). Two vehicles were involved in the collision one of which had left the road and overturned in a field. One casualty was taken by ambulance to RD&E hospitial to be treated for head and chest injuries. Post Hill is currently closed in both directions between the Uplowman Road junction and the Crown Hill junction. A male casualty was treated for injuries at the scene.

Inline Kitchens' tasty fundraiser

Inline Kitchens in Newton Abbot took part in Rowcroft Hospice’s ‘Big Bake’ to help raise vital funds for this well deserving local charity. The showroom was a chatter with people coming to show their support and enjoy the atmosphere on the day.

The tea party was due to take place between 10am-1pm at their showroom opposite the Clock Tower in Newton Abbot, however the last guests arrived at 3.30pm. For a suggested donation guests were offered a tea, coffee or soft drink together with a sweet treat.

Charity pamper evening needs your help

Exeter Axhayes adoption centre are hoping to hold a charity pamper evening on Friday 17th October 2014 between 7 pm and 10 pm at the Cat & Fiddle pub on Sidmouth Road.

The organisers are looking for beauticians, nail technicians, beauty therapists etc who would be willing to help the cats and kittens in their care by donating small quick treatments.

A new survey carried out by Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) has revealed current attitudes in Devon towards running greener businesses.

The survey, which polled SMEs across the county, asked a series of questions to ascertain interest in environmental best practice. 52 per cent of respondents believe Devon to be proactive in terms of environmental best practice, with a significant 76 per cent agreeing that they would like to improve their performance.

Barn destroyed in major blaze

Three fire engines from Middlemoor, Danes Castle and Cullumpton, a water carrier and a hydraulic platform from Danes Castle were sent to deal with a fire in a barn at a farm in Broadclyst just after midnight.

On arrival crews confirmed the barn 32 metres x 15 metres was well alight and got to work extinguishing the fire using compressed air foam and hose reel jets.

There were 20 bags of ammonia nitrate in the barn and a hazardous materials officer gave advice on these. The Environmental Protection Unit was requested to attend, and mobilised from Taunton.

War of words - Valiant Soldier stages moving tribute

Buckfastleigh people are staging a performance of poetry and the spoken word to mark the centenary of World War One.

Tipperary Days is taking place in the atmospheric period surroundings of the Valiant Soldier, the former pub that is now a heritage attraction. The shows, between Thursday May 29th and Saturday May 31st, will be performed by members of the Buckfastleigh Drama Group and by Rosemary Jessop.
