Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

Academics' key climate change report

Academics from Geography at the University of Exeter have played an important role in The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s most recent report.

This second part of the IPCC’s assessment considers how the changing climate impacts on people and the natural world and suggests options for how to deal with these issues through adapting the economy, infrastructure and society.

The report is the culmination of three years of work by more than 300 authors from 70 countries, reporting in almost 2000 pages.

Axhayes coffee morning and car boot sale

Exeter Axhayes Adoption Centre are holding a coffee morning and car boot sale on Saturday 31 May at their centre, Little Hill cottage, Clyst Honiton.

Coffee will be served between 10am and 2pm and the car boot sale will finish an hour earlier.

There will be a charge of £5 for cars and £7 for vans.

As always the profit goes straight to all the cats and kittens at the Exeter Axhayes Adoption Centre.

Exeter streetlights to switch off this week

Around 1,200 streetlights in residential streets in St Thomas and Exwick will be converted to part-night lighting this week (Thursday 8 May). Streetlights previously on all-night will be switched off from about 12:30am to 5:30am, before coming on again until dawn. The change is the latest phase of Devon County Council’s controversial programme to reduce costs and carbon emissions, having already converted over 44,000 residential street lights across the county. East Devon blooms at the Chelsea Flower Show

For the second year running, plants from Otter Nurseries will be entrancing visitors to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The East Devon plant specialist is supplying all the flowers for the crowd-stopping Robert James trade display garden.

The garden, sited just outside the main flower marquee, is being created around a stunning collection of bronze sculptures and water features based on quintessentially English literary characters.

A Devon community project has won this year’s Prince of Wales Award for its work in tackling isolation, loneliness and ill health in rural communities.

The Community Support Group, based in the village of Newton St Cyres near Crediton and sees volunteers offered assistance to local people as part of the Neighbourhood Health Watch Scheme. Vehicle Fire at Trago Mills Petrol Station

A vehicle has been left severely damaged after suffering from a fire at Trago Mills Petrol Station.

Two fire appliances from Newton Abbot attended the incident, at 12.28pm, with the fire believed to be accidental.

The vehicle had been pushed off of the forecourt before the fire service arrived.

On arrival, crews found the vehicle to be well alight. They used two breathing apparatus wearers, two hose reel jets and four dry powder extinguishers.

The fire resulted in the engine compartment of the vehicle being severely damaged by fire.

Seaton Hotel gets go-ahead after bat corridor promise

Plans for a 12-bed hotel with 38 units of self-catering holiday accommodation at Seaton Heights were last week given the go-ahead by EDDC.

The proposal was initially refused because of objections from Natural England who were concerned about potential interference with bat movements in the area.
