Honorary degree for former Exeter MP

Former city MP Ben Bradshaw thanked University of Exeter students for “all they have given the city” as he joined their graduation ceremony to be given his own honorary degree.

Sir Ben’s award was in recognition of public service, including his achievements to boost the quality of schools in Exeter, bring jobs to the city and his campaigning for LGBT rights.

During his 27 years as Exeter’s MP he worked to bring the Met Office to the city and worked closely with the University of Exeter and others in the community to bring about a huge school reorganisation and rebuilding...

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg is calling on the Government to introduce minimum unit pricing immediately, as part of the battle to reduce the harm caused by alcohol misuse. Bishop Robert continues his Prayer Pilgrimage

Bishop Robert spent a morning with chaplains and prisoners at Exeter Prison this week, as part of his prayer pilgrimage around the county in the run up to his installation.

He said his time at the prison was a “deeply moving experience”.

“I met a whole group of men in their 20s, one of them asked me to pray for his partner, who was expecting their first child and was suffering from being apart. I also spoke with a man who was on a ward on his own, dying. It was very moving seeing how the chaplains were ministering to these men.”

Morrisons Exeter takes out trolley locks

Morrisons is removing all trolley locks at its Prince Charles Road store in response to Exeter’s customer feedback, which has called for quicker and easier shopping trips. A team were visiting the store today (2 July) to update all of the store’s trolley fixtures. This will remove the need to insert a £1 coin or token to release a trolley from its bay. PM warns of antibiotic time bomb

David Cameron has called for global action to tackle the growing threat of resistance to antibiotics.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Cameron said: "If we fail to act, we are looking at an almost unthinkable scenario where antibiotics no longer work and we are cast back into the dark ages of medicine where treatable infections and injuries will kill once again."

Growing numbers of infections are resistant to antibiotics but no new classes of anti-microbial drugs have come onto the market for more than 25 years.

Local opticians support veterans

Camoflauge and war paint were in on Saturday when staff from an Exeter opticians raised awareness and funds for the Blind Veterans UK.

On Saturday 28 June staff from Specsavers Exeter dressed up in camouflage to raise money for the charity. In addition, they have raised funds throughout June for the cause.

RGB Community Fund available to sports clubs

Following the launch of RGB Building Supplies Community Fund, when £1,000 worth of building materials was given to a charity last month, the builders merchant is now calling for sports clubs in the Exeter area to get in contact and tell them what help they need.

Perhaps a local football team needs their changing rooms decorated, or a cricket club needs help with some fencing, or possibly the facilities used by a local martial arts club need updating, whatever the project, RGB would like to find out how £1,000 worth of materials could help.

A budding entrepreneur has opened his first hairdressing business in Ottery St Mary.

At just 19 years of age, Matt Booth is determined to make a success of Alley Barber, a traditional barber’s shop.

Teignmouth police get temporary boost

Shoppers and residents in the seaside town of Teignmouth will notice a greater police presence in the town on Wednesday 2 July as 22 new officers take to the beat.

The extra officers are not an increase in the officer numbers at the station, but are in the final stages of their training before being sent to stations across the force area.

Everyone living in East Devon is being urged to vote for a local finalist in a national competition for lottery funding.

The Sid Valley Memory Cafe for dementia sufferers will be one of seven good causes to be featured on BBC television’s The One Show this week to promote an online vote that closes in September.
