Nello cyclists have special reasons for taking part

FORCE Cancer Charity’s largest annual fundraiser – The Nello bike ride – is less than two months away and cyclists from across Devon and around the country are gearing up for the big day on Sunday June 28.

Since the first Nello Century Cycle Challenge in 2000, the ride has raised £1.5million for Exeter-based FORCE, which works locally to support anyone affected by cancer, face-to-face and close to home.

The charity has set a target of raising £127,500 from Nello 2026 to meet the increasing demand for its unique services.

Tributes to boy who died

A community was today in mourning after the death of a 12-year-old boy following a collision with a lorry in Exeter.

Flowers were laid at the scene of the accident on the junction of Topsham Road and the Countess Wear roundabout.

Among the heartfelt messages was one which read: “The little lad with the biggest, cheesiest smile. Taken far too soon. RIP little fella. Bunches, Shannon, Alfie and Ellie xxxxx”.

Another read: “I send my love and thoughts to your family at this hard time. You were not alone in your final moments on this earth”.

Farmers urged not to come a crop-per on a level crossing this harvest

There are hundreds of user-worked crossings on farmland in Britain, which see a marked increase in traffic during the harvest season. Figures collated over the past ten years reveal that the number of collisions and near misses at these types of crossings also sharply increases over the harvest months.*. Since the beginning of June, Network Rail has recorded dozens of incidents of level crossing misuse on farm crossings. Fortunately none of these have resulted in collisions or serious harm but they have caused over ten hours of delays to rail services.

Teenager witnessed 'horrific scene' following collision

A teenager has told The Exeter Daily how she witnessed the horrific scene following the accident in which a 12-year-old boy died.

The girl, who has asked not to be named, said she was returning from work when she saw paramedics treating the boy.

She said: “There was a lot of commotion and emergency vehicles on the scene, and they had put a large white sheet to cover up what was going on.

“I’ve never seen anything like that before so it must have been pretty horrific.”

Anguish at the scene of fatal crash

There was anguish etched on the faces of motorists and pedestrians as they passed the spot where a 12--year-old died after being in collision with a lorry.

The boy was crossing Topsham Road close to the Countess Wear roundabout when the accident happened.

He was treated at the scene but died soon after from his injuries.

Many drivers waiting at the traffic lights where bouquets are starting to appear shook or bowed their heads in sorrow.

Some pedestrians, including a mother with her own young son, stopped to read the tributes in silent contemplation....

A 12-year-old boy has died after after he was involved in a collision with a skip lorry on a zebra crossing in Exeter yesterday afternoon (Thursday 28 August).

Police attended a road traffic collision at around 3.10pm on Topsham Road, near Countess Wear.

The collision happened on the zebra crossing on the Topsham side of Countess Wear roundabout and involved a 12-year-old boy, who was a pedestrian, and a skip lorry.

The boy, from Exeter, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival...

Police in Newton Abbot have issued images of two suspects they wish to identify following a spate of high value shoplifting offences. The two suspects are believed to be responsible for a series of high value shoplifting offences that have occurred in Newton Abbot, Plymouth and East Devon. Leading Exeter climate scientist honoured

A world-leading climate scientist from the University of Exeter has been honoured with a prestigious national science award.

Professor Pierre Friedlingstein, from the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences has been bestowed with a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award.

He is one of just 14 scientists nationwide to be awarded the honour, in recognition of his outstanding research entitled Earth System biogeochemical feedbacks, climate targets and emissions mitigation.
