Free family fun returns to Exeter Quay

Families can enjoy a summer of free activities down by Exeter’s waterside.

Running every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday during the school holidays, the Transit Shed and Piazza will be hosting creative and hands-on activities for all ages.

Once again, Summer at the Quay has been organised by Exeter Canal and Quay Trust, bringing free holiday fun to the quayside.

No booking is needed, just drop in and enjoy activities ranging from wool weaving and boat building to circus skills, puppetry and music making.

Trust rears rare Devon species

A Devon conservation charity has taken another step to help save a threatened native species.

The Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, based at Paignton Zoo, has teamed up with the Environment Agency and Buglife to rear white-clawed crayfish.

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is one of the largest freshwater invertebrates in the UK but is under threat of extinction in the wild because of the introduced North American signal crayfish, which out-competes its British counterpart for food and carries a killer plague.

Crime stats should not shift focus from victims

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg insists that persuading victims to report crime is far more important than presenting lower crime figures after the latest round of crime figures were released by the Office of National Statistics.

The figures confirmed that, while Devon and Cornwall has one of the lowest rates for serious acquisitive crime, the peninsula has high levels of reported of violent and sexual crime.

Fire crews tackle Beacon Heath blaze

Fire crews from Exeter were called to tackled a blaze at Galahad Close in the Beacon Heath area of the city this morning, after a report of alarms sounding and smoke issuing from a building.

On arrival, just before 1am, crews found a fire involving a chip pan in the kitchen of a flat.

One hose reel jet and a fire blanket were used to extinguish the fire.

Crews rescued one occupant from the flat, extinguished the fire and ventilated the property.

Severe weather warning for Devon

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning from tonight with lightning, hail and even possible tornadoes.

A spokesman said: "In this situation large amounts of energy are available in the atmosphere and this coupled with high moisture content can lead to torrential downpours along with frequent lightning activity, large hail and locally strong gusts."

Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau has received £9,307 to fund a financial education programme for disadvantaged people in Exeter. The donation was provided by the Santander Foundation which offers grants to UK registered charities for projects that help disadvantaged people in local communities. The grant, which was received through the Advice Exeter Partnership, will enable Exeter CAB to provide financial education sessions to disadvantaged people in and around Exeter.

Police close Exeter 'crack house'

Police have secured a Crack House Closure Order on a property in Exeter after police received numerous complaints about drug dealing at the property.

The matter was heard before Exeter Magistrates’ Court today (17 July) where evidence was given in relation to the high level of antisocial behaviour endured by local residents living near 84 Chaucer Grove, in the Polsloe area of the city.

Crime levels remain static across Devon and Cornwall

Recorded crime remains static across Devon and Cornwall, new figures released today (17 July), show.

The figures show an average increase of one crime a day in the last year.

Year on year, recorded crime up to June 30, 2014, showed an increase of 0.4 per cent – an increase of 345 offences.

New feminist group established in Exeter

A new feminist group called Exeter Feminists has been created. The group, which aims to promote gender equality in the community, hope to help local charities and will hold regular meetings.

Exeter Feminists was created by Ellis Taylor after discovering a lack of feminist groups in the city.
