Youngsters check out newly laid football pitches in Exeter

Young footballers in Exeter have been given a sneak preview of newly laid grassroots football pitches that they will play on this coming season.

Youngsters from Heavitree Youth Football Club were given a feel of the newly created playing surface at Bromhams Farm Fields. The Under 11s side will be one of the teams playing on the three pitches when the season starts next month.

Coastguard safety appeal as hot weather continues

Glorious sunshine and hot temperatures has seen the Coastguard deal with more than 2,500 incidents, nationally, in the past month alone. From 21 June to 21 July 2014, there were 2,549 incidents listed on the Coastguard database, ranging from struggling swimmers, cliff fallers to broken down boats and kayakers in difficulty.

Now with the start of the school summer holidays, Coastguards are reminding people of a few top tips to help them stay safe and enjoy their time at the coast.

Exeter’s original gourmet burger restaurant has launched a smokin’ range – but only after local rugby stars tested out the new menu first.

Famed for its gourmet burgers made with Devon beef from Greendale Farm, the Queen Street restaurant has today launched the Urban Smoke Shack.

Motorcyclist seriously injured in A379 crash

A 27-year-old motorcyclist from Teignmouth has been seriously injured after being involved in a collision on the A379 between Kenton and Starcross today.

Police were called shortly before 7.45 this morning (Thursday 24 July) after a male motorcyclist was trapped under the red Mitsubishi Shogun, registered to Bristol.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics after being freed by the fire service, and then taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

His injuries are said to be life threatening.

£9m to tackle fuel poverty

A number of families in Exeter will get a warmer home this winter and beyond thanks to CosyDevon – an energy saving scheme launched today by Exeter City Council and eight other local authorities which will see up to £9 million invested in improving homes across the county.

First students graduate from course funded by PCC’s small grant

The first three students have completed an exciting course funded by Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg’s small grant scheme.

Grow 4 Good, based in the grounds of Dartmoor Zoo, Sparkwell, received a grant of £2,789 from Tony Hogg’s small grant scheme for a new project called Ticket 2 Work which allows 12 people between 16 and 25 to achieve the City and Guilds NPTC level 2 certificate of competence in brushcutting.

Cancer survivor to start Race for Life

A courageous schoolgirl who has survived leukaemia will sound an air horn to start Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in Exeter on Sunday, 27 July at 10am.

Jasmine Larkman, aged 11, from Crediton, will be the guest of honour at the event at Westpoint Exeter.

She will start the formidable army of nearly 4,000 women on their way round the 5k and 10k routes to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work.

Drivers are being urged to slow down on country roads this summer to enable families, walkers, cyclists and horse riders to enjoy great British countryside, as a survey reveals that a huge proportion treat them like racetracks.
