Youngsters check out newly laid football pitches in Exeter

Young footballers in Exeter have been given a sneak preview of newly laid grassroots football pitches that they will play on this coming season.

Youngsters from Heavitree Youth Football Club were given a feel of the newly created playing surface at Bromhams Farm Fields. The Under 11s side will be one of the teams playing on the three pitches when the season starts next month.

Public warned to beware of phone scam

Devon and Cornwall Police has received reports relating to a professionally run national scam.

This has led to many vulnerable people, who are often elderly, being ruthlessly defrauded out of thousands of pounds.

There have been a considerable number of victims nationwide, including many locally in the Devon and Cornwall area. The average age of victim appears to be 70 years old, with losses ranging between £4,00 an £100,000-plus.

Criminals will have an extra problem to contend with soon after Devon and Cornwall Police's 'A' litter puppies, Axel and ‘Arry, completed their police dog training courses.

Along with their fellow trainees Charlie and Jack, the two police dog graduates attended a special pooch passing out parade.

Works signify start of Seaton Jurassic

On Friday 1 August work begins to alter the entrance to the Harbour Road car park in Seaton in preparation for the start of the building of the £4m visitor centre, Seaton Jurassic.

The car park will remain open using the existing entrance until Sunday 31 August to allow for this year’s Seaton carnival and funfair. A compound to house the site offices of the contractors will be created on the Tramway side of the car park from 15 August.

During the FIFA World Cup Devon and Cornwall Police carried out its annual summer drink and drug driving crackdown, supporting of a wider national Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) campaign to reduce risk on our roads.

Cranbrook’s play area is open for business

East Devon District Council has announced that the long-awaited play area at Cranbrook is now open for the serious business of kids having fun.

There will be no official opening at present, as there is still quite a bit of cosmetic work to do on the site – which will be completed later in the year by the contractors working for the consortium of house builders at Cranbrook.

A scientist from the University of Exeter has developed a simple, cheap and highly accurate device for diagnosing a frequently fatal lung disease which attacks immune deficient individuals such as cancer patients and bone marrow transplant recipients.
