Exeter College is celebrating another exceptional year of success, with outstanding results across its A Levels, T Levels, and vocational programmes.

The College continues to set the bar for academic excellence with an A level pass rate of 99.52%, well above the national average of 97.4%. Among the many highlights, an impressive 23 A Level subjects achieved a flawless 100% pass rate.

£125,000 available for community projects

Devon Community Foundation is delighted to announce that its Summer Grant Round is open with £125,000 available for Community Projects across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay helping to build thriving communities.

For this round the Foundation are looking to support community projects mainly run by volunteers with an income of less than £30,000 pa which are helping to bring the local community together, with grants between £500 and £1,000. There's still time for people to have their say on proposals to extend the principles of licensing for houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) not already covered by the current scheme.

Conman uses 'fake life' to steal hundreds from Devon women

A conman who duped Exeter and Devon women for money by infiltrating their lives, has pleaded guilty to seven charges of fraud and theft between July and December last year.

Timothy Giles, 46, an unemployed former toilet cleaner, concocted a kaleidoscope of lies, claiming to be an airline pilot, a fire fighter, and a policeman to lure women into trusting him.

The charges he faced included ‘dishonestly making a false representation, namely pretending to be a qualified airline pilot, intending to make a money gain.’

Cygnet Theatre graduates tread the boards of success

Exeter’s Cygnet theatre are celebrating today as all of the graduate cohort are signed to professional agents. The former students, who have signed to Mahoney Bannon Associates in Brighton, performed Strawberries in January at the King’s Head Pub Theatre in London, impressing the agency, who offered all of them interviews.

New proof of age card favoured by Devon and Cornwall Police

A new proof of age standards scheme card (PASS) has been launched across England and Wales to provide a single, formal proof of age for young people. The scheme is the preferred proof of age identification of Devon and Cornwall Police.

A new standardized 18+ design has been adopted in England and Wales to combat the confusion created by multiple card designs amongst retailers. Use of the PASS card gives retailers and their staff the confidence of knowing that the card is a trusted and is a secure form of identification.

Residents asked for views on wild beavers

People are being asked their views about the future of Devon’s first wild beaver population for more than 300 years.

A public meeting is being held to discuss the beavers on Tuesday 19 August at The Institute in the east Devon town of Ottery St Mary (EX11 1HD), close to where the beavers are believed to be living on the River Otter.

The hosts, Devon Wildlife Trust, are inviting people to make their views known from 3pm on the day with a formal public meeting scheduled for 7.30pm that evening.

Exeter Deaf Academy’s College students and staff will return in September to a refreshed entrance, thanks to the help of Michelmores LLP.

A trusty team of 5 volunteers from the law firm’s Exeter-based office spent the day at the Deaf Academy recently. Study amends NHS telephone treatment policy

A study led by the University of Exeter Medical School has concluded that the NHS strategy to shift primary care to telephone consultations “does not save money or reduce practice workload.”

The study found that patients who receive assessments via telephone, known as ‘telephone triage’, following their request for a same-day consultation with a GP are more likely to require further support or advice when compared to patients who see a doctor in person.

Beams lifted into place on South Devon Link Road Project

After an anxious two days of waiting, one of three largest cranes in the UK lifted the beams into place for the new bridge at Maddacombe Road as part of the South Devon Link Road Project.
