New children's library opens in Exeter

After months of building work, the new children’s library in Exeter is now open to the public. The Clore Children's Library features a brand-new sensory area, a floating mezzanine and activities for older children. Designed to be welcoming and accessible to all children and families, and championing interests, passions and their imaginations.

Former Exeter Chiefs hooker, Chris Whitehead has confirmed a series of events celebrating his career in professional rugby having been forced into retirement earlier this year due to a neck injury.

Party fundraisers at Casa Maroc

Exeter restaurant and live entertainment venue, Casa Maroc will be raising funds for the International Citizen Service charity this autumn with two lively party functions on Friday 5th and Saturday 20th September.

Met Office launches 'leaves on the line' forecast

It may be an excuse poked fun at by many a comedy sketch but leaves on the line is such a serious problem that the Met Office has developed a new, enhanced, low adhesion forecast system to help the rail industry plan for the problem.

Autumn leaves can cost the rail industry in excess of £100 million a year, as they contaminate the rail head and can lead to very low levels of adhesion especially when combined with slightly wetted rails. Devon groups share Lottery millions

A rowing club project that will increase search and rescue efforts is one of 214 South West projects to share £1,748,596 from the Big Lottery fund in the latest round of Awards for All grants.

East Devon based Exmouth Rowing Club will use £9,935 National Lottery funding to purchase a new rescue boat. The club members are currently refurbishing their new premises at Exmouth’s old Lifeboat station. A touch of the Poirots about Chiefs!

There was a touch of the Poirots about some of the Exeter Chiefs squad when they lined up on media day ahead of the new season.

Waxed moustaches were de riguer among some of the younger players, amongst them, England up and comer Jack Nowell.

He told The Exeter Daily he was looking back through some previous team pictures and liked the idea of doing something different.

He opted for the moustache and was joined by several other members of the team.

Exeter City Council air quality initiative

Exeter City Council has commissioned a brand new city-wide initiative – a Low Emission Strategy - to improve Exeter’s air quality.

The main aim of the strategy is to protect people - especially the vulnerable - from respiratory and other potentially life-threatening illnesses related to poor air quality caused by traffic.

7m climbing wall on water is UK first

This weekend Exeter’s canal basin will become the home to the UK’s first artificial climbing wall on water!

A 7 metre high structure is being built on a canal barge and will be floated into the water to provide the wall for the UK’s first inland deep water solo competition.

Staged by local climbing wall, The Quay Climbing Centre, the event has attracted over 40 of the UK and Europe’s top climbers together with over 160 ‘amateurs’ from across the country to compete in the two day event which takes place on the 30th and 31st August.

Leading wildlife recorder sounds out Devon

Chris Watson, one of the world's leading wildlife recorders, is preparing to bring sounds from rural Devon into the heart of RAMM.

When using the stairway linking the garden entrance to the Down to Earth gallery, visitors in 2015 will be treated to soundscapes from nearby coast and countryside.

Chris is currently capturing sounds from rockpools and estuaries, farmland and meadow, pebblebed heathlands and oak woodlands. Four seasonal recordings from each location will be used to create a changing soundscape evocative of Devon’s diverse ecosystems.
