Date for 2015 Dawlish Air Show

Dawlish Air Show committee has announced that next year’s Dawlish Air Show will take place on Saturday 22 August.

The decision has been taken to move the airshow away from the Bank Holiday weekend in 2015 for a number of reasons, one being that weekend occurs very late next year (the Bank Holiday is Monday 31 August) and it is also the weekend over which Dartmouth Regatta has been scheduled.

Storms cause flooding and travel disruption

Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused flooding and travel disruption across Exeter and East Devon this morning.

In Honiton a lightning strike caused a fire at a property in Stout. Two fire engines from Honiton and one from Sidmouth attended just before 8am.

Two hose reel jets and four breathing apparatus were used to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was a lightning strike on the property.

In Dawlish fire control received around six calls to reports of flooding inside properties due to heavy rainfall.

Responding to the results of the Scottish referendum, Councillor John Hart, the Leader of Devon County Council, said today: “I am really glad that the United Kingdom isn’t going to be broken up. But we now have to ensure that Devon and the South West doesn’t lose out because of the promises made by the Westminster parties to Scotland.

Seaton Jurassic - just part of the story

Police telephone system restored

The telephone system has been completely restored at police headquarters in Exeter following work by BT emergency engineers. Telephone services within Exeter control room were significantly disrupted this morning after lightning struck a mast at Middlemoor HQ. All telephone calls to police were diverted to the Plymouth control room and all 999 calls were not affected.

In honour of International Credit Union Day on Thursday 16 October 2014, the Archdeacon of Exeter is launching ‘Join a Devon Credit Union Month’ when he hopes Devon people will join up during October to keep their savings in Devon.

Appeal to locate missing Paignton man

Police are appealing for information to help locate a missing Paignton man.

Jonathan Lathey was reported missing from his home in Paignton just before 8am this morning, Friday 19 September.

He is regarded as vulnerable and police are becoming concerned for his welfare.

Jonathan is described as being 32, a white man, 5 ft 11in high with black hair in a pony tail.

If you see Jonathan or have any information regarding his whereabouts please contact police on 101 quoting police reference 156 190914.

Devon children act up for healthy living

An innovative programme bringing actors into classrooms across Devon to encourage and support children to make healthier choices on diet and exercise has been selected to feature in this week’s British Science Festival.

The Healthy Lifestyles Programme is being run by specialists from the University of Exeter Medical School and Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

The programme sees Year 5 pupils work with a drama group who play the part of four characters: Snacky Sam, Disorganised Duncan, Active Amy and Football Freddie.

Princesshay is set to celebrate the start of term with their annual Student Lock-In.

Exeter professor bestowed with major award

A leading professor from the University of Exeter has secured a significant international award, in recognition of his pioneering research.

Professor Nick Stone was bestowed with the inaugural Raman Award for the most Innovative Technological Development, at the recent International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy held in Jena, Germany.

As well as the award, Professor Stone, who specialises in Biomedical Imaging and Biosensing, also received a 2,000 Euro prize.
