Science on tap: Exeter pubs to host Pint of Science 2026 

Some of Exeter’s best-loved pubs will be hosting this year’s Pint of Science, offering up fascinating talks on everything from atoms and galaxies to understanding neurodiversity.

Running from 18-20 May, this year’s festival marks the 13th edition of the annual event, which brings researchers out of the lab and into local bars in 42 cities across the UK.

In Exeter, venues including the Bootlegger, Arcadia and City Gate Hotel will transform into hubs of scientific discussion with informative talks, demonstrations, live experiments, and a multi-city pub quiz competition....

Work starts on Decoy Link Road

Galliford Try has been awarded the £2.6 million contract to build the scheme which will widen and realign the existing Kingskerswell Road, and create a signal controlled crossing over the rail bridge. It will also improve safety along the busy route for pedestrians and cyclists, with a new shared cycleway and footway.

The scheme, which was awarded £1.8 million of Department for Transport Local Pinch Point funding, will join the South Devon Link Road at the Aller interchange.

Home Secretary praises 101 review in Devon and Cornwall

Police and crime commissioner Tony Hogg’s review of the 101 police non-emergency service in Devon and Cornwall will be used to help improve the system in other parts of the country. Home Secretary Theresa May has praised the work done by Mr Hogg and his OPCC team and confirmed that the Home Office will urge other forces to consider adapting the review findings and recommendations in their own areas. A Devon mum has created a new website, www.playmapp.co.uk , to detail the locations of free places for children to play.

Initially covering the whole of Devon, PlayMapp features over 600 child-friendly sites.

A quick search on the easy-to-use website, designed and developed by Rokk Media Ltd of Exeter, will demonstrate that you are never far from a play area in Devon. Site visitors can also add to the quality of entries by leaving comments and uploading photos.

4,000 respond to budget consultation

More than 4,000 people have taken part in Exeter City Council's 'Stronger Exeter' budget consultation.

Council Leader Pete Edwards said he was overwhelmed by the response from the public.

"We have got some very tough decisions to make over the coming months so it is good to know that people in the city are getting involved and making their voices heard," he said.

The City Council launched the consultation in October, revealing that it had to save a further £4 million over the next three years.

Police are seeking the identity of serial shoplifters who have targeted the Boots shop in Greenhill Retail Park, Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot.

Police believe that the pair are working together and between them have stolen in excess of £1,000 worth of fragrances over three separate occasions, between Tuesday 30 September and Wednesday 1 October.

YMCA Exeter's Santa abseil breaks record

YMCA Exeter’s 5th Annual Santa Abseil took place on Saturday 6th December with almost 60 local people, young and old, abseiling off the Princesshay car park to help combat youth homelessness.

Fifty-seven people put on their Santa suits, an increase of over 20 participants from last year, and overcame the dizzy heights to step over the roof’s edge and raise over £4,000 to support those without safe accommodation, with the figure still rising.
