Council Leader welcomes decision on future of local councils in Devon

City Council Leader Cllr Phil Bialyk has welcomed the Government's announcement on local government reorganisation in Devon.

The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government has approved the joint proposal by Exeter and Plymouth city councils to create four new unitary authorities for the county.

This means that in future, one council rather than multiple councils will deliver most local services in each area.

The new unitary councils will be:

Letters from famous writers to Tarka the Otter author given to University

A fascinating collection of personal letters from a host of British literature luminaries to Henry Williamson, the author of Tarka the Otter have been donated to the University of Exeter. The University has received more than 2,000 letters from such celebrated writers, including, Siegfried Sassoon, John Betjeman and Enid Blyton as part of Williamson’s extensive personal archive. The letters arrive at the University almost 50 years to the day since Williamson first donated his literary manuscripts. University of Exeter works with Cole Commission to improve international trade

The Cole Commission is in discussions with the University of Exeter Business School to explore the possibility of creating degree programmes specialising in international trade.

This announcement coincides with the release of the Commission’s final report into the UK’s export performance, setting out a road map to help business achieve £1tn of exports by 2020. They can be found living it up in some of Exeter’s favourite locations, including cafes, independent shops and tourist destinations. Have your say on ward boundary proposals

Residents are being given the opportunity to have their say on the proposed changes to ward boundaries in Exeter.

On Friday and Saturday (26 and 27 June), between 10am and 4pm, officers from the City Council will be at the historic Guildhall in the High Street to discuss the Local Government Boundary Commission for England’s (LGBCE) recommendation for ward boundaries in Exeter, which are currently the subject of public consultation.

Plans displaying the proposals will be available, together with comment forms which local residents are being encouraged to return to the LGBCE...

Trainees from across Europe head for Devon

A Devon-based work placement company is preparing for its busiest summer yet with hundreds of trainees travelling to the South West from across Europe.

A record number of trainees, more than 220, will be welcomed by The Training Partnership (TTPL) in July. Another 75 will arrive in August.

The company, based at Torquay Innovation Centre, works with hundreds of Devon firms to provide placements in different sectors ranging from engineering and IT to tourism and retail.

Lydia Robinson has been found safe and well. Police have thanked the public for their help in finding her.

Police are seeking the public’s help to locate a 14-year-old who is missing from Bideford.

Lydia Robinson was last seen at an address in the town at lunchtime on Tuesday 23 June and officers are concerned for her welfare.

Exeter time travel experiment to be broadcast

There will be a live broadcast of time travel being screened at Walkabout in Exeter on Friday.

A lady known as Anna from Exminster put an ad on Gumtree to find a companion after she believed she had invented a time machine.
