Exeter to Celebrate Best of Local Food and Drink at Gate to Plate Festival

Exeter is set to host a celebration of the region's finest food and drink producers when the Exeter Gate to Plate Food Festival comes to Sidwell Street on Sunday 4 October.

The free, family-friendly event will bring together more than 70 food and drink makers from across Devon and the surrounding area, with most producers based within a 30-mile radius of Exeter.

Visitors can expect a wide variety of local produce including artisan bakers, farmers, brewers, orchardists, coffee roasters, delicatessens, sweet treats and an array of street food vendors.

Recovery cafe to open in Exeter

Exeter will soon be home to the county’s first ever permanent recovery café.

A fund-raising drive is being held to fund the café, which will provide a much-needed community hub for people who have experienced issues with drugs or alcohol and their families. The café will be based at RISE Recovery Integration Services, which provides drug and alcohol support and treatment services for people across the area. Pedal power with a difference in Exmouth

Pedal power comes to Exmouth later this month as static outdoor dynamo bikes – which can generate enough power to charge up mobile phones - are installed near the seafront.

Exmouth Town Council, East Devon District Council and a local resident have worked together to bring the unique £30,000 exercise bicycles, complete with a shelter, to the town. Sunday trading shake-up expected

Shops could be allowed to open for longer on Sundays under radical plans to devolve powers over trading hours to major towns and cities to be unveiled in tomorrow’s summer Budget.

In the biggest shake-up of Sunday trading laws since the 1990s, Chancellor George Osborne wants to allow mayors and councils to determine for themselves what the rules should be in their areas.

The existing law prevents larger stores from opening for more than six hours. It was relaxed as an exception during the 2012 Olympics, resulting in a significant surge in sales.

£100k tennis courts for EGCC

Just in time for the Wimbledon Championships, Exeter Golf and Country Club have announced they will invest £100,000 in new tennis courts.

The club, who first installed tennis courts in the 1930s will close four of the six courts at the end of September so the work can be completed outside the main tennis season.

Study shows grey squirrels are quick learners

They may be viewed by some as an invasive species or a commonplace pest of public parks, but a new study from the University of Exeter has shown that grey squirrels are actually quick learners capable of adapting tactics to improve efficiency and reap the best rewards.

To test the animals’ intelligence and mental flexibility researchers invented a task involving a box with 12 sunken wells, four of which were hollow. Of the four, two contained hidden hazelnuts.

Rail strike to go ahead

Rail Union RMT said this morning that talks aimed at settling a dispute on First Great Western over the threat to jobs and safety from the introduction of the new Hitachi Inter-City trains have broken down without agreement and the forty eight hours of strike action across the company starting at 18.30 hours on Wednesday 8th July goes ahead as planned.
