Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

Butterfly Conservation on Dartmoor workshop

The recently launched Dartmoor Conservation Garden in Princetown is hosting a free talk and workshop Butterfly Conservation on Dartmoor on Friday 17 July between 12 – 3pm.

Jenny Plackett, from the ‘Two Moors Threatened Butterfly Project’ will talk about the work being done on a landscape scale across Dartmoor (and Exmoor), which aims to reverse the declines in three important UK threatened butterfly species: the Marsh Fritillary, High Brown Fritillary and Heath Fritillary.

South West NS(RAF)A celebrate 10th anniversary

Some 80 members of the South West Group of the National Service (Royal Air Force) Association and their guests gathered for a celebratory buffet at the White Ensign Club in Exeter in early June on the occasion of the Group’s tenth anniversary.

The local Group was established in 2005 with a nucleus of twelve members, while today over one hundred RAF National Service veterans are “on the books”. Nationally the organisation can boast a membership of over 2400.

The Group was recently represented by eleven members at the Armed Forces Day parade in Exeter.

Sixth form students graduate from Pathways to Law

A group of high achieving sixth form students from Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, have graduated from a national project which aims to raise aspirations and the confidence of young people to pursue a career in law.

Twenty six students from the region participated in the University of Exeter strand of the Pathways to Law programme. They received a certificate of achievement on Wednesday 1 July at a celebratory event to herald their success in completing the programme. Building destroyed by fire near Exeter Airport

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received calls to reports of a derelict building on fire on the Old A30 adjacent to Exeter Airport at 7.41pm yesterday (Sat).

One fire appliance from Middlemoor, one from Danes Castle and one from Ottery St Mary were dispatched along with the water carrier from Torquay.

Upon arrival crews confirmed one derelict agriculture building measuring 30M x 10M well alight and requested an additional fire appliance for water and manpower, this was mobilised from Danes Castle. Crews set to work to extinguish the fire using two main jets....

Professor Michael Depledge, one of the University of Exeter’s leading academics, has been elected as an Honorary Fellow to the Royal College of Physicians at a special ceremony in London.

Applications are now open for groups in Devon to apply for grants of up to £3000.

Grassroots Grants up to £500, Connection Grants up to £1000 and Action Grants up to £3000 are available for projects that can prove they will have a positive impact on vulnerable young people and will help cut crime, especially anti social behaviour, substance abuse or school absenteeism.

Exeter Round Table recently visited disability charity St Loye’s Foundation with a generous cheque donation to show their continued support for local charities in the South West.

On November 5th every year Exeter Round Table put on a magnificent firework display at Westpoint, Clyst St Mary in which all the proceeds go towards supporting a selection of local charities including St Loye’s Foundation.

With over 8,500 people attending, the 2014 firework display was one of the biggest in terms of numbers and saw the highest amount of money raised for charity to date.

The Montgomery Primary Little and Junior Starz* put on a spectacular display of Zumba at the school's annual Summer Fete, which was enjoyed by both children and adults.

More than half of us know someone with cancer

More than half (68%) of the people in Devon – an estimated 651,500 people – currently have, or have had, a family member or a close friend with cancer, reveals Macmillan Cancer Support today1. Earlier this year, Macmillan announced that there are currently 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK, which is set to rise to 4 million by 20302.

Overall, most people in Devon (76%) know, or have known, someone with cancer – whether a colleague, acquaintance, family or friend.
