An injured wading bird has been rescued and given safe haven at Living Coasts in Devon.

Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium can provide the ideal estuary habitat for the whimbrel, now thought to be the only one in a public zoological collection in the UK.

The adult female bird was found on a roadside in Cornwall by a passing member of the public. She was taken to Rosevean Veterinary Practice in Penzance. Newton Abbot Racecourse has been named as one of the best racecourses in Britain for racehorse owners, after once again achieving Gold Standard from the Racehorse Owners’ Association (ROA).

Out of 60 racecourses in the country, Newton Abbot was one of 12 racecourses to be awarded the accolade, with others including Hamilton Park, Kempton Park and Market Rasen.

The Gold Standard award strives to recognise excellence for owners at each racecourse in the country and looks to improve the experience for racehorse owners year on year.

We are thrilled to announce that Exeter athlete Jo Pavey will officially open our new £1.2m Kings House Day Hospice in Honiton next month.

Jo, who grew up near Honiton, says she is delighted to open the new centre which provides much needed support to terminally ill patients and their families living in East Devon and which is already oversubscribed.

Devon band Soul Traders showed off their crazy side prior to their recent gig and gave a ‘leg up’ to support cancer.

Lead singer Matt Byrne, who has survived tongue cancer never thought he would sing again when he was diagnosed with cancer six years ago.

The father-of-three from Exeter is rallying men, women and children in Devon to Stand Up To Cancer this October. The band also felt the sad loss of their friend and fellow singer Lara Schmidt who died from cancer in July 2014.
