Get away from the crowds and hustle and bustle of town to experience Christmas at Castle Drogo.

There is a treat in store for children on the weekends of the 12, 13, 19 and 20 of December as they can follow the trail around the garden and grounds to find Father Christmas in his grotto and receive a special present for just £2.

The lead up to Christmas is the perfect time for families to spoil themselves by taking advantage of the home made cakes in the café, or something hearty from the delicious festive food menu. There will also be a three-course Christmas lunch special on Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 December. Booking is essential on 01647 434143.

For those who’ve got a bit of last minute present buying to do, the shop sells decorations, festive food and woollen blankets to snuggle up in on a cold night; and on Friday 4 December from 10am to 1pm Learn Devon is running a workshop to design and create a Christmas wreath using a range of natural materials. This costs £24 and includes resources and refreshments. Again, booking is essential on 01822 613701.

Each weekend until 20 December there will be special behind-the-scenes guided tours; and after a tour, visitors may be tempted by a walk down into the Teign Gorge. Winter is the perfect time to admire the expansive views from the castle down into the gorge as well as the architecture of the garden. There are miles of pathways to explore and breath taking views across Dartmoor.

“The winter period is an exciting time for Castle Drogo” says Bryher Mason, House and Collections Manager. “It is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the work that goes into conserving our collection and our plans for next season.”
