Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

People all over the UK are being asked to get involved in an unique and historic art project to commemorate those who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme through a photographic and detailed legacy of all 19,240 Allied servicemen who lost their lives.

Say NO to doorstep crime

Devon residents are being warned against rogue doorstep traders offering home maintenance services this spring.

In 2015 87 complaints were received by the service in relation to doorstep crime, with an estimate loss of over £101,000.

In March this year six complaints were made and in February an estimated £3,000 was lost by victims, a 100 per cent increase on 2015.

The longer daylight hours often coincide with a rise in complaints made to Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service.

Last April, 10 complaints were made with an estimated £28,000 lost....

Honiton play areas to get a £46,000 facelift

Local children at two Honiton primary schools have chosen the designs for eagerly awaited improvements to the Bowling Green - Millers Way and Langford Avenue play areas in Honiton.

East Devon District Council and Honiton Town Council have been working closely to spend £46,850 on improvements to the play areas in the town. Just over £28,000 will be spent at the Bowling Green - Millers Way playing field and a further £18,500 at Langford Avenue.

Exmouth schoolchildren ride the Avocet Line

Pupils from Marpool Primary School in Exmouth recently took a free train trip on the Avocet Line which links Exmouth and Exeter, to visit Exeter Cathedral as part of their Religious Education studies.

The trip was organised by the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership under their “Train trips for schoolchildren” initiative. This aims to introduce more children to rail travel and is run in conjunction with Great Western Railway, who provided free travel for the children and teachers.

Voices In Common Folk Choir's new season

An Exeter singing group is going from strength to strength.

Run by Devon music charity Wren Music under their Voices In Common banner, the Exeter Folk Choir Voices in Common has several local concerts under its belt, a national theatre show, a growing membership and a European trip later in the summer.

Trustees of Rainbow Living Exeter have publicly thanked local businesses and charitable foundations for their generous donations, which have enabled the purchase of a specialist bath for their Exeter house.

Local healthcare and protection insurance provider The Exeter donated £2,000; the charity was also supported by the James Tudor Foundation, which donated £4,500, and the St Edmunds and St Mary’s Major Charity, which donated a further £330.

Scouts add a sparkle to Seaton Wetlands

The 1st Lym Valley Scout group had a wonderful morning down at Seaton Wetlands on March 20, as part of their weekend adventure.

After camping at Seaton Scout hut, the Scouts walked to Seaton Wetlands nature reserve to undertake an orienteering challenge. They worked together to navigate their way around Colyford Common and back to the Wetlands Reed Base.

After a well-earned picnic lunch the group spent some time cleaning the windows on three of the bird hides. Visitors to the Wetlands will now get an even better view of the wildlife on site thanks to the Scouts.
