The Chairman of East Devon District Council, Councillor Stuart Hughes was joined at Knowle in Sidmouth on Monday 14 March 2016 by 14 enthusiastic pupils from Sidmouth Primary School who came to watch the raising of the Commonwealth Flag in celebration of a partnership between Toilet Twinning and Fly-a-Flag for the Commonwealth. This joint initiative invites schools to help flush away poverty through toilet twinning - for a donation schools can choose to twin their own toilet with one in a Commonwealth country. Leading experts will be able to help people make an informed decision as they decide how to cast their vote in the UK’s referendum at an event in Exeter.

To remain or leave the EU is the most important political choice facing the UK for a generation.

A panel of specialists will answer questions from the public about Brexit and the UK remaining in the EU, at the “UK and EU: Ask the Expert” event, at Alumni Auditorium on the Streatham Campus on 25 April. New Government strategy launched to encourage travelling by bike or on foot

A blueprint to encourage more walking and cycling is being launched by the Government today (Sunday 27 March).

The new strategy has a clear ambition that by 2040 getting around by bike or on foot will be the natural choice for shorter journeys, or as part of a longer journey.

It includes ambitions to double cycling, reverse the decline in walking, reduce the rate of cyclists killed or seriously injured and increase the number of children walking to school.

This will be met through providing safe and attractive infrastructure to encourage journeys on bike and foot...

Superact's Exe-Arts programme is hosting an Open Pottery event on BBC Get Creative Day Everyone is welcome at the Exe-Arts Pottery Open Day on Saturday 2nd April at St David’s Community Centre pottery studio in Exeter.

Superact, a not-for-profit arts & wellbeing organisation based at the Community Centre, are BBC Creative Champions and the event is running as part of the BBC’s day celebration of all things creative. RGB Building Supplies, which was established in 1850, is asking the local community to help it collate a record of its 166 year history.

Now operating out of 16 branches across the region, including one on Alphinbrook Road in Exeter, RGB wants to create an archive of its rich past, detailing the people who worked for the company in years gone by as well as what was going on in the wider community throughout this period.

Therefore, if anyone has old receipts, leaflets, brochures, quotes or photos, or knows someone who has an RGB-related story to tell, the builders merchant...

Gemfest 2016 this Sunday

Gemfest is back for its fourth year of festival fundraising tomorrow (Sunday March 27).

The last three events saw over £15,000 raised for Hospiscare and The Brain Tumour Charity.

Organised by a local brain tumour ‘survivor’ Gemme Wensley and her friends, the daytime event (11am-4pm) is packed with family activities, while in the evening we’ll be hosting a variety of live music and entertainment from 6pm. Come and warm up for the festival season, there’s something for everyone – guaranteed. Don’t forget to wear your wellies – it is a festival after all!

Pavilions Teignmouth gets ready for official opening

An official opening date for the £5million new Pavilions Teignmouth has been announced for Monday 4 April.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 3pm and will be carried out by Teignbridge District Council’s Leader Cllr Jeremy Christophers and Margaret Davidson, Chair of the Pavilions Board of Trustees. This will launch a month of diverse arts activities showcasing all the centre can deliver and the best of local talent.

New Phear Park play area opens

Phear Park’s new improved play area, featuring £48,000 of exciting leisure equipment, was officially declared open on Monday 21 March 2016 by East Devon District Council’s Chairman Councillor Stuart Hughes and Exmouth Town Mayor Councillor Maddy Chapman, who is also ward member for Exmouth Brixington.

The play area project was a joint partnership between East Devon District Council and Exmouth Town Council who have worked closely together to spend Section 106 funding, contributed by developers for every new home created in the town.

Easter weather warning issued for Devon

The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the Easter weekend.

High winds are expected to affect Devon on Saturday with gusts of 40-50mph in some inland areas, possibly topping 60mph across exposed coasts and hills.

The strong winds will be accompanied by heavy rain at times.

The warning is valid from 7am-9pm.

The Exter-based agency’s chief forecaster said: “An active frontal zone is expected to move east across the country through Saturday, accompanied by strong, gusty winds and one or two spells of heavy rain.
