Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

These new signals will give buses priority at the Polsloe Road / Barrack Road junction, making it easier for buses to progress towards Heavitree Fore Street or move from the bus lane into the right turn lane for...

Blue Chip Holidays supports RNLI

Blue Chip Holidays presented the RNLI with a cheque for £1,000.

The Exmouth RNLI was the lucky receiver of the donation, which is to help the crew in all the work they do in the local Exmouth community.

The cheque was given as part of Blue Chip's ongoing support, in which last Christmas the company decided to give the RNLI the money they would normally have spent on company Christmas Cards.

Allan Lambert, managing director of local Exeter holiday operator Blue Chip Holidays handed over the cheque to the lifeboat station, whilst Kevin Riley, MBE, showed the team...

“The ethos behind Minis Academy has always been to promote the social and health benefits of team sport by introducing primary school children to the character-building values of passion, respect,...

Stamps. Foreign coins. Postcards. All may seem worthless at first sight. But they can in fact be invaluable sources of fundraising.

Consider the case of former policeman Tony Coop who has been volunteering for over 23 years raising over £260,000 his local hospice, Hospiscare, by collecting just these very things.

Tony’s heartwarming story demonstrates how collecting stamps, coins and postcards can help Hospiscare. It begins, as is so often the case with a personal story of kindness from the charity:

“It goes back to 1992/3 when Jill’s mum had cancer we had two...

Pensioners swap bingo for martial arts

From ancient Korea and now to the east of Melbourne, Australia, the martial art of Soo Bahk Do has an unlikely fan group – older Australian women. Every week on a Monday, a group of Australian ladies in their sixties meet up at a hall in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Rather than meeting up for a game of bingo, or to play a round of bowls, these women have a much more active activity in store for them – they’re students of Soo Bahk Do.

Soo Bahk Do was brought to Australia around forty years ago, and literally translates to ‘the way of the striking hand’. And unlike some of the...

Action taken over bedtime fire deaths

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has developed a bedtime safety campaign to raise the awareness of the importance of having a bedtime routine.

This was based on data from the previous year that established a number of fire deaths and injuries that were caused by people drinking, smoking and cooking late at night and them becoming distracted or falling asleep.

One part of the campaign focused on the most vulnerable, aged between 75 – 85 who are often alone when they die or are injured (not necessarily living alone).

The importance that a home fire...

Members of West Hill Women’s Group were entertained when Honiton auctioneer, Duncan Chilcott gave a talk on discovering antiques.

The thirty-strong group had been invited to bring along items that they were curious about for Duncan to discuss.

Amongst the items of interest was a handwritten journal from WW1 that had been passed down through the generations. The journal originally belonged to a soldier serving in South Africa, who decided to write it after he caught malaria and was hospitalised.

Another treasure was a Victorian or Edwardian bumblebee brooch encrusted...

Council position on Sylvania Valley explained

A large piece of public open space land at Sylvania Valley is being auctioned by the Public Open Spaces Charitable Trust on 28 July. Residents are concerned that the land may not be available as public open space in the future and that the land might be developed.

When this estate was constructed in the 1970s, this land was required to be laid out as public open space. At the time, the developer would have been offered the opportunity of transferring it to the Council, together with a sum to cover the ongoing maintenance.

Instead, the developer chose to pass the site to the...
