Fore Street, Exeter, will be closed to through traffic for three weeks while South West Water repairs a collapsed sewer.

Fore Street will be closed between Bartholomew Street West and Market Street from Monday 19 September to Friday 7 October with diversions in place.

South West Water Project Manager James Howourth explained: “We need to repair a collapsed sewer that has flooded one of the properties on Fore Street. This will involve digging to a depth of four metres in the middle of the road.

“We’ll be using some innovative ‘no dig’ technology once we’ve reached the damaged brick culvert to repair an eight-metre section, which will reduce the time needed for the repair from six weeks to three.

“We’ll also be working 12 hours a day, seven days a week to finish this essential work as quickly as possible.

“Access to Fore Street will be maintained and we’re liaising with affected businesses and residents to try to accommodate their individual needs as much as possible.”

Two diversion routes will be in place – one for HGVs and one for light vehicles.

Local bus companies have been informed.
