Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service remind everyone that buying cheap, unsafe chargers may put their home and loved ones at risk.

Fire crews recently attended a small electrical fire in Exmouth. The fire was caused by a faulty replacement lead or appliance.

Exmouth man aims to raise £50k to mark 50 years with type 1 diabetes

Colin Rowland, 58, of Exmouth is undertaking a series of impressive fundraising challenges over the coming months to raise funds for the type 1 diabetes charity JDRF.

Colin is taking on the challenges this year especially as 2016 is his 50th diaversary – 50 years since he was diagnosed with the autoimmune condition type 1 diabetes.

Devon’s JSA claimants lowest on record

Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) claimants in Devon are at a new historic low after falling by 58 during July, with the total claimant count now standing at 3,029.

Of Devon’s eight districts six experienced falls , ranging between one and 34 claimants.

In Exeter the number of claimants rose by 30 claimants and in South Hams the number increased by just one. The largest fall of 34 claimants was seen in East Devon.

The claimant rate (proportion of the county’s working age population claiming JSA) remained largely the same with East Devon, Teignbridge and Torridge falling...

Exeter venue Sandy Park has released an extra date for their Christmas party schedule.

Bookings are now being taken for Christmas Parties on Saturday 10th December, including extremely popular option the ‘Live Band Night’.

The Live Band Nights, which this year feature Exeter-based band Mammoth and a photobooth to capture memories of the evening, are available on Friday 9th December, Saturday 10th December, Friday 16th December and Saturday 17th December.

Officers from East Devon District Council’s StreetScene service have had a busy past few weeks helping find homes for 17 life-sized dinosaur models, previously roaming free in Exmouth.

A yellow severe weather warning for strong wind has been issued for Devon on Saturday, with gusts of up to 55mph expected in areas.

A spell of unseasonably strong southwesterly winds, accompanied by heavy, blustery showers, is expected to develop across the south of the UK later on Friday but peaking during Saturday daytime.

The strongest winds will lead to large waves round exposed coastlines.

Elderly woman victim of distraction burglary

Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was the victim of a distraction burglary in her home in the Whipton area of Exeter.

The incident happened around 3-3.30pm on Wednesday 10 August 2016.

The woman had £100 taken from her bedroom after a man attended her address stating that he was a gardener and offered to do some work for her the following day. However, before he left he asked the lady if he could use her upstairs bathroom to which she agreed and allowed him into her home.

After he left, the victim later discovered that £100 had been removed...

Body found in search for missing man

The body of a man has been located in the sea at Lynton during the search for missing person Andrew O’Reilly.

Police and Coastguard have been carrying out searches for the 51-year-old Guildford man who went missing from a Lynton campsite on Monday 8 August.

An RNLI lifeboat crew found the body of a man in the water at Elwill Bay near Neck Woods, Lynton, around 5.30pm yesterday [15 August].

Ambulance attended and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Roman coin hoard to stay in Devon

The Seaton Down Roman coin hoard will stay in Devon thanks to a number of donations and grants.

The hoard has been purchased by Exeter’s RAM Museum for £50,000, allowing it to be kept together and displayed for the benefit of the people of Devon and Exeter and for Hoardfuture generations.

The purchase and conservation of the hoard of coins was made possible by contributions from Devon County Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Clinton Devon Estates, a private donation by Patrick Long, and members of the public.
