Work to start on Heavitree Road bus improvements

Improvement work to enhance bus services on Heavitree Road in Exeter will get underway next month (February).

The scheme, which will start on Monday 2 February, involves the construction of a new traffic island and installation of a new set of traffic signals at the end of the outbound (eastbound) bus lane between Grendon Road and Polsloe Road/Barrack Road.

These new signals will give buses priority at the Polsloe Road / Barrack Road junction, making it easier for buses to progress towards Heavitree Fore Street or move from the bus lane into the right turn lane for...

Climbing event hits new peak

Elite climbers from across the globe descended – or should that be ascended – on Exeter this weekend.

They were taking part in the Quay Climbing Centre’s Deep Water Solo event, which sees a seven-metre wall built into the canal basin. Competitors climb without ropes and drop in to the canal when they lose their grip.

And there were also some familiar local faces who were trying their hand at the sport for the first time.

Brave city councillors Rosie Denham and Emma Morse gave the wall a go, and they were accompanied by former footballer and Exeter City football Club...

There is a huge disparity in the numbers of young people being employed across the UK’s cities and regions, including in the South West, which has one of the lowest rates of youth unemployment in the country (11.7%). This compares to the region’s cities which have higher youth unemployment rates: Plymouth (16.2%), Bournemouth (15.8%) and Bristol (14.2%) According to a new report by EY in association with the EY Foundation (an independent UK charity), this could have an impact on both the region and the wider UK’s aspiration to achieve ‘inclusive growth’, particularly at a time when the UK’...

A happy youngster in Torquay plays in the water with her new toy…

This is Gemini, the two-year-old fur seal pup at Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo. Her new toy was custom made by dry suit manufacturers O'Three Ltd. of Portland, in Dorset.

Kiesha Summers, from O'Three, explained: “We supplied Living Coasts with dry suits. When we came to visit, both the penguins and Gemini were fascinated by the neoprene hoods – and this gave us an idea. Our clever seamstresses covered a football in 1.5mm double lined Neoprene with a small Velcro opening for a pump.”
