Staff from Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) have joined a national campaign to encourage people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Organ Donation Week started on Monday 5 September and continues until Sunday 11 September. To mark the week, NHS Blood and Transplant are calling on people to help ‘Turn an End, Into a Beginning.’ The campaign encourages people to talk about organ donation with their family and friends.

Rare Civil War pamphlets to be auctioned

A collection of propaganda pamphlets written during the years following the English Civil War are to be sold at Chilcotts September sale.

The fascinating 17th Century documents were discovered by the Chilcotts team in amongst books and papers during a routine house clearance in Exeter.

Auctioneer Duncan Chilcott explained: “Our research uncovered that one of these pamphlets, The Kings Cabinet opened: or certain packets of secret letters & papers was based on letters written by King Charles I, taken from his campaign chest after the battle of Naseby in June 1645....

Join in this month's big beach clean!

As part of the Great British Beach Clean week (16-19 September), organised by the Marine Conservation Society, the National Trust has a series of beach cleans taking place in Devon and Cornwall this September for volunteers to come along and help clear up their local beach. Some of Exeter’s most fascinating buildings will open their doors to the public free of charge next week for Heritage Open Days.

Among those taking part are Exeter’s Guildhall, the Barnfield Theatre, Princesshay ,Tuckers Hall, 21 The Mint, various Red Coat Guided tours and Exeter’s Underground Passages. The event runs from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 September.

Missing Christopher found safe

Christopher Lock, 44, who was missing from the Newton Abbot area since around 7.30pm on Sunday 4th September 2016, has been found safe.

He was located at around 10.45pm last night, Tuesday 6th September 2016, and taken to Torbay District Hospital to recover. His family has been informed.

Police would like to thank the Dartmoor Rescue Group for its assistance and all members of the public who emailed or called in with sightings.

Concern over increase in people turning to Citizens Advice Exeter

Citizens Advice Exeter, today said it was concerned about an increases in enquiries about welfare benefits, employment and housing.

In the first four-months of the financial year the charity helped 14% more people when compared to the same period in 2015.

The advice trends over the period were as follows:

Housing Overall, the charity dealt with 10.9% more housing enquiries. The main increases being:

• 94.7% about housing association properties • 77.2% about actual homelessness • 7.0% about threatened homelessness

Fire at Exeter's Cavern Club

Firefighters were called to tackle a fire in the kitchen of Exeter's Cavern Club just after 10pm last night (Tuesday).

One fire appliance from Danes Castle was mobilised to a fire alarm sounding. On arrival smoke was seen coming from the property, and crews requested further assistance. Appliances from Danes Castle and Middlemoor were mobilised.

Crews got to work with two breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.
