University pedals to victory in national cycle challenge

Intrepid staff from the University of Exeter have pedal-powered their way to victory in a national competition designed to encourage people to cycle, whether that be for fun, exercise or to work.

The near 300-strong peloton from the University beat off competition from more than 2,000 organisations nationwide to secure the yellow jersey in this year’s National Cycle Challenge.

In total, staff from the Streatham and St Luke’s campuses covered more than 32,000 miles –well over the circumference of the Earth - over the course of September as part of the challenge.

Over 9 million people to pay for Christmas on a credit card

There are less than 100 days until Christmas and the reality of how much money is going to be spent on loved ones has been revealed in a new survey. A staggering 70 per cent of people admit they haven’t started saving for Christmas, meaning millions of others will have to play catch up with their finances in the short run up to Christmas.

Citizens Advice Exeter celebrated its Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service at an official reception hosted by The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor Councillor Cynthia Thompson on Wednesday 12th October at the historic Exeter Guildhall.

Attended by volunteers and staff of the charity, the reception was an opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution that the volunteers of Citizens Advice Exeter make to their community.

Farmwise Devon takes food and farming message to 10,000th school child

Farmwise Devon welcomed the ten thousandth primary school child through its doors at Exeter Westpoint Arena this week, as the event celebrated its fourth year educating children about where their food comes from.

Year two pupil, Katie Boore from Brixington Primary Academy, Exmouth, was among 1,400 children attending the event on Wednesday 11 October.

The interactive day was organised by Devon County Council and was designed to take primary school children on a food journey from field to fork using touch, taste and practical activities.

East Devon District Council has begun work on a new Jurassic themed artificial nine-hole adventure golf facility next to the play area at Seafield Gardens in Seaton.

The new mini golf course, which will be used by both local residents and visitors to Seaton, is being funded by money collected by the council from developers for new homes they have created in Seaton. Exeter film premiere for psychological thriller Hell's Bells

Having smashed its Crowdfunder target earlier this year, Hell's Bells, made by Exeter based film and theatre company Wandering Tiger, will receive a local screening on Friday 2 December 2016 at Exeter Phoenix as part of the Two Short Nights film festival.

Five-time Olympian and 2014 European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey today visited her former secondary school, The King’s School, Ottery St Mary, to present a commemorative piece of the London 2012 athletics track, that she and so many other Olympic legends raced on four years ago.

Exeter Round Table organise Exeter’s biggest and best fireworks display with this being their 36th annual event.

Pre sales tickets are available for only £16 for a family of four and can be purchased from many outlets in the Exeter area. Stallholders wanted for Christmas Fayre

Are you a home crafter? Exeter’s Beacon Community Centre is looking for stallholders for its Christmas Fair on Saturday 10 December 12 till 3pm.

Last year’s fair was packed with hundreds of shoppers and 150 local children visited Santa!
