Join Simon Lee, National Park Ranger, on his monthly volunteer outings to assist in the important restoration and maintenance of the Haytor area.

This month we will be repairing major erosion on the track from Haytor Visitor Centre to Haytor Rocks. The work will take place on Sunday 12th February, starting at 10.30am and finishing at 3.30pm.

Haytor’s stunning moorland views and easy access make it a popular destination for anyone seeking to experience Dartmoor.

The track up to Haytor Rocks provides a great walking route, and sees over 25,000 pairs of feet every year...

SW Natural History Union to visit Elan Valley

The South West Natural History Union is running a coach trip to Elean Valley, Monday-Friday, 5-9 June 2017.

Tuesday-Thursday, the group will be led by Phil Ward, a highly experienced naturalist and conservationist, on behalf of Radnorshire Wildlife Trust, who will help everyone see summer visiting birds, plants, bugs and scenery. You will also be visiting sites around the Elan Valley including the Red Kite Centre, Gigrin farm, at feeding time.

Newtown Community meeting

Newtown Community’s AGM is taking place at the community hut in Belmont Park on Monday 27 February. Starting at 7.30pm the meeting will inform residents of the latest proposals for ‘The Vision’, the project to have a new community building to replace the existing hut.

This is the proposed layout for the new hut which will be approximately 60% bigger than the current hut and include a large room (twice the size of one of the current rooms) and a second room to allow a small group space or separate cafe area. It will include up to date insulation, underfloor heating and PV panels too...

Local bird watcher spots rarely seen bird at East Devon managed heathland site near Axminster

At the end of January, a rare Little Bunting bird was spotted by a local bird watcher at Trinity Hill Local Nature Reserve, a heathland managed by the East Devon District Council Countryside service.

Little Buntings are rarely seen in the UK, they breed in the far North East of Europe and across Northern Asia, typically spending winter in Southern Asia, China and India. Easterly winds, which dominated Autumn 2016, resulted in only a few being detected in the UK.

A trio of siblings from Exeter Cathedral School has each been awarded a place in the prestigious National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain.

The Daniel-Greenhalgh siblings - Esme (y7), Theo (y6) and Sabina (y5) - have all won a place in various sections of the elite GB orchestra for children. Esme and Sabina are both violinists, and Theo plays the trombone, and the three of them also sing together as Choristers in Exeter Cathedral Choir. Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has released its latest advice trend figures.

These show a 10% increase in enquiries from clients about welfare benefits and tax credits, compared to the same period in 2015.

Citizens Advice Exeter has helped 5,972 people with advice and information across all enquiry areas since 1 April 2016.

Louisa Johnson, the youngest ever winner of the X Factor, has been named as special guest at pop superstar Olly Murs’ outdoor concert at historic Powderham Castle, near Exeter on Saturday, July 29.

Antique jewellery taken in Exmouth burglary

Police seeking witnesses after a large amount of jewellery was taken from an Exmouth home.

Offenders got inside the property in Valley Way sometime between 10.30am on Tuesday 24 January and 12.30pm on Thursday 26 January.

They made an untidy search of the premises before stealing around 40 items of jewellery including some antique items of huge sentimental value.

Among the items stolen were a 100-year-old 18ct gold ring with diamonds and an 18ct pearl and amethyst ring which is around 70-years-old, plus a very old garnet bracelet and set of garnet earrings.
