Princesshay will host the inaugural World Pancake Racing Championships on Shrove Tuesday (4 March).

Local businesses, organisations and individuals are now being invited to demonstrate their pancake flipping credentials by entering a team of between two and four members.

The Pancake World Championship is a partnership between local Event Management company Wacky Nation and Princesshay, to raise funds for local charity Dream-A-Way, Princesshay’s charity of the year for 2014.  It will be hosted by Radio Exe.

The relay race involves each team member running along a short course before flipping a pancake three times.  Eagle-eyed officials will be checking that the flipping is done properly.  Speed, skill, dexterity and co-ordination will be key ingredients but above all, a willingness to have a flipping fun time.

Regulation sized pancakes will be kindly supplied by Giraffe, hopefully made with self-raising flour to give those flips extra lift! Teams have the added incentive of eating their pancake at the end if it survives the course intact.

There are only twenty places available so local businesses and individual teams are advised to enter early to avoid disappointment.  That will also allow plenty of time to practice those flips and even stir up some friendly rivalry with other companies or shops.  Fancy dress or corporate branding is strongly recommended to add some colour and glitz to the event and for the winning team to get photographed with the trophy.

Sally Raynes, Wacky Nation said, “This is a fantastic excuse to step out of the office for some sporting fun and even earn some spectacular publicity for your company. After all, where else can you become a World Champion during your lunch break?   After such a wet and windy start to 2014 the event is a great opportunity for teams and shoppers to get excited about something”.

Wayne Pearce Centre Director, Princesshay said: “This event is a great way to celebrate pancake day this year and a chance for local businesses to raise funds for a very worthy cause, our charity of the year, Dream-A-Way.  We’ll be entering our own team and look forward to seeing other Exeter businesses getting involved as well.”

The pancake race will take place during lunch time with the first heats kicking off at 12.30pm with prizes including a £100 Princesshay Gift Card and a trophy awarded to the winner.  Presentations are expected to take place at 1.15pm.

In addition to the racing, there will be music and fun entertainment with individuals encouraged to have a go at the ‘Pancake Flipping Challenge’ and see how many times they can toss a pancake in a minute.

The organisers hope teams will get themselves sponsored, (though not compulsory) and raise money for local charity Dream-A-Way, Princesshay’s charity partner for 2014.

Entry costs just £30 per team and there will be prizes for first, second and third place teams, plus a prize for the team that raises the most sponsorship.
